    Hi,

At the moment I’m shooting with a TLR (Yashica Mat) and I wouldn’t mind upgrading to a Hasselblad, but I just don’t know where to start looking where to get a body/lense/etc…anyone know of any good places with deals for secondhand equipment and any advice?

    Thanks in advance,
    Johnny

DML in Portobello in Dublin [(01) 4781888] are the Irish agents for Hasselblad,

If you buy from DML, don’t expect too much in the way of customer or after sales service!

I lost a locking bolt off my tripod head last week and called them to see if they could order it in (as a spare part) from Manfrotto. When I gave them the model number of the head I was told that it was an older head which they didn’t have in their current or last years catalogue (I had already told them it was an obsolete head!). The guy on the phone then went down to the warehouse to check what if they had anything in stock. He came back up to say they had nothing suitable in stock. He suggested that I buy a replacement head and gave me prices for two inferior heads, saying that these were similar heads! When I pointed out that all I was missing was a locking bolt and I didn’t need a head, he suggested I send the head to them for them to have a look at to see if they could find something to fit. I then explained that I was using a regular bolt as a stop-gap measure to which he replied that’s probably all they would do anyway.

So, not only was there a distinct lack of product knowledge, but a complete unwillingness to understand the problem or to help fix it. All he needed to do was order the spare part using the Manfrotto part number I had given him, but no, even that was too much.

Next I called Manfrotto’s UK importer, Johnsons. I explained why I was calling them to order the part rather than DML and was told I was the third caller to them that week with a similar tale! They took the part number details along with a credit card number from me and advised me that it could take up to five weeks for it to arrive. At least he was honest and didn’t say I’d have it next week knowing it could in fact take longer, like some companies I know have a habit of doing!

Out of curiosity, I called Manfrotto in Italy. They confirmed what I already knew, that the head was now obsolete but said that they have a policy of holding spares for a period of five years after last production. They expressed surprise at the response I received from DML and actually undertook to deviate normal procedure in that they would send me the part direct from the factory.

It would seem that quality after sales service in Ireland (not just in the photographic sector), with a few notable exceptions, has quite literally gone down the drain. We’ve developed a society where everyone is out to get as much as they can for themselves for as little effort on their part as possible. And I fear it’s only going to get worse as time goes by!

Careful Throsten, we dont wanna be sued.

Johnny I’ve a 500cm and 500elx, I got my 500cm years ago from FFordes and the elx recently on the hasselblad mailing list for ?200.

DML have about 8 classic bodies, I was in there today and they have several lenses. Actually Alan in the Camera Repair place next door has a few hasselblad bodies there aswell. Some nice ones.

Just back to DML and their sales service, 3 weeks ago I had to leave in my elx for repairs to the place next door to them [separate company] When I went back to collect the body, it wasnt ready. I had a shoot with a singer songwriter the next day and a shoot with some friends the following week and I really really wanted to have my elx. I was moaning in DML after and they offered and gave me a loan [no charge] of a body for the 3 weeks. I’m also missing a lens hood from an xpan lens thats no longer made or stocked and Denise in DML is checking all over for it.

Johnny if you are really keen on a Hasselblad, I’ll meet you for lunch one of the days and chat about the different ones. Or search for the Hasselblad Manual by Ernest Wildi, one of the older editions, but hey coffee is cheaper

Must agree with Thorston. My experiences of DML over the past 2 years leaves a lot to be desired.
They had even closed the account I opened vith the late Denis Ivory back in the 80’s until I told them
last month to either send out the goods ordered or keep them. From here on I will be very “stuck”
before I’ll be calling on them……..and even then I think I’ll pay extra someplace else !
Things that got to me were not sending out stuff I ordered and losing orders given.
Not returning my calls, taking 14 months to issue a credit note ……….. I could go on and on !
I dont mind saying this here as I did have it out with them at Photofest but still no gesture was
made for the grief I suffered. I really feel they dont appreciate the photographic side of their business
    anymore.

Sorry Johnny if I am hijacking the thread but I am giving you the best advice I can on where NOT to go for your hasselblad.

No GCP, that’s fine!!!!! As I said, if people aren’t satisfied with a service that someone “offers” than people should know about it, J

Sued? On what grounds? I can’t imagine being sued for simply stating fact.

Your experience with DML was clearly a better one than the one I had, so maybe I just caught them on a bad day. Or maybe a little ?10.00 tripod bolt isn’t worth the same as a Hasselblad camera. Whatever the reason, I was disappointed that I couldn’t get my problem resolved locally and had to look abroad for a solution.

Hi Johnny, There is a photographer in Portadown, Ronnie Hynds who is selling a couple of bodies and a selection of lenses. They are all in very good condition.

    Hope this helps John

Not long ago I saw a post here that was quickly [and rightly] deleted where one member spoke of being threatened with legal proceedings over comments made “that questioned professional standing” of another member. I’m not sure how it was resolved but I hope it was sorted, but my word it happened very quickly.

I like to hear of peoples experiences, good or bad of any company, service or product. However stating “don’t expect too much in the way of customer or after sales service!” goes way beyond one users experience and could cause legal problems for the website owner and the poster. The inferrence is that ALL transactions will be dissapointing which is clearly not the case.

Legal proceedings can be costly to defend, even if you are “right” and just stating fact. But if you guys have lots of spare cash for legal eagles, fire away, dont let me stop you.

    Sorry Johnny for going o/t.

Yeah I just want to start shooting proper medium format and see Hasselblad as the way to go, mainly it’s for portrait work, so how much would people think should be spent on something like that?
