Don’t go to Sea in an inflatable dinghy…….!?

Cushendun witnessed a dramatic Sea Rescue yesterday afternoon when someone got into trouble out at Sea in an inflatable boat. HM Coastguard sent flares up to alert the approaching Lifeboats of the position of the dinghy….

The lifeboats arrive very quickly and pull the man out of the water:

And bring not only him, but his inflatable boat to shore…..

Where a crowd gathers to witness HM Coastguard and Ambulance personnel take over, and ensure that he is alright……

Nice captures. I’m a retired member of Wexford Lifeboat and have been part of many of these type of incidents. Unfiortunately for where our boat is based (Wexford Harbour) the majority of call outs are for poor individuals who decide they’ve had enough and enter the water from Wexfords bridge or close by in Ferrycarrig.

What you have captured is a magazine type shoot that everyone wants to see. What I’ve seen from the boat isn’t as text book as this. To look at a parent of a young son or daughter peering over a railing as you vainly search for them, wishing that you do and don’t find them is harrowing.

Incidents like you’ve captured are always nice to see as they have a happy ending and congratulate you on your selection and the non capture of the individuals face. As silly as these incidents seem to some they are a step away from a fatality.

However, in this case it seems to be an exercise as the person on the stretcher has an RNLI dry suit. They are regularly run and not publicised but are realistic to view and partake in. Also, the flare used is a parachute flare and in any emergency a red flare is used. (I’m not knocking your documentary just adding some more info for the range).

    Well done.

    Alan.

    Huh!

What if a weak-hearted onlooker had taken an infarction?

At least it explains the rescued sailor’s ability to dress without an instruction booklet.
