Just couldn’t get close enough (kestrel)

I’ve been chasing this little kestrel for the past few days, but just couldn’t get close enough using a 70-300mm 300mm.

This is a cropped image. :(

Still nice to see though miki, his tail feathers look like
    two little legs….lol

    Thanks Jenny.
I’ll have another try during the week using a 70-200mm + x2 converter & hopefully I’ll have enough reach (providing of course that it’s still in the neighbourhood).

Nice shot Miki considering how hard it is to find these guys. Best of luck this week, hopefully he’s still in the area.

Its a good effort Miki. Its hard to get right under them for a good shot.

    Thanks Padraig.
I was a bit frustrated today when there was no sign of it, but then it just flew past me (flying fast & low) before disappearing again.

I messed up today by accidently knocking my camera’s mode dial to manual which over exposed due to a too slow shutter speed & is not as sharp as it should be.

Ah well, better luck next time…..Hopefully.

Another try from yesterday. She wasn’t hovering at all this time & was quite nervous, so this is the best I could achieve ( heavily cropped again).

Maybe you need a hide Miki?
I don’t think that lens will do you any favours trying to catch birds in flight but the best of luck in your endeavours.

    Thanks John.
A hide would be ideal if there was somewhere to set one up, but unfortunately, I was shooting these from the main road & there’s nowhere suitable. I asked permission from the owner of the land to photograph from there, but he didn’t want anyone on the property. :(

That’s bad news regarding the permission Miki but maybe his concerns were for the bird?
You did the decent thing anyway by asking, frustrating though to be refused!

    Thanks John.
His main concerns were safety / insurance related, as well as for the welfare of the wildlife. It was frustrating, but I appreciate his concerns. I wouldn’t just go wandering on someone’s property without asking, but unfortunately, there’s plenty that will, which could be one of the reasons why there are so many farmyard accidents. A “townie” like me wouldn’t understand the dangers.

You sure it’s the same bird throughout? The tail doesn’t look the same “two legs” as in the first one :D :D

She fans out the tail if she’s hovering, otherwise she tends to tuck it in during normal flight. Not totally sure it’s always the same bird. :?
