The boa and the bulb

After finally getting the card back, here’s a quick shot from yesterday:
Again shot with the ringbulb.. f4 1/160 ISO 400.
For those wondering about the bulb, it’s a circular ceiling bulb. I took the ballast and start out of a light fitting and put it in a box. Then attached the 4 way light fitting via long cable.
Retouching was only a quicky job, I’ll go back over it when I decide what one I actually like!!!Alan RossiterParticipantWhoooaa! Photography Blue Peter style.
I’m not into model shooting but this is excellent. Magazine cover excellent!
Alan.
GrahamBParticipantGreat shot Sean, now post a shot of the lighting setup and
a tutorial on how to make it. :DseanmcfotoMemberI should’ve taken shots when I was making it, Graham.. It’s not so hard anyhow!
Here’s an older picture of it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seanmcfoto/205726605/
this is from the back, where I’ve mounted it on foamcore to shine some of the light back onto the face.
[/i]GrahamBParticipantrandomwayMemberExcellent picture!
I thought about this ringlight earlier and read some diy articles and howtos, but I don’t really do portraits, so there is no motivation to spend time on it. I think, these guys have something like your setup. http://www.studiolighting.net/
seanmcfotoMemberThey have one using a bunch of bulbs. I’ve seen a few variations on this.
My thing came from the work of Stephen Eastwood. I’d seen his stuff all over the place, DPReview, ModelMayhem etc. I liked his ringbulb stuff so I asked him about it. He uses Kino flo bulbs, but they’re hard to get here, so I just used one from a local electrical wholesaler.
I’m on the lookout for a daylight balanced bulb though as have to do a lot of colour correction work with this one. Depending on where in the 50Hz cycle you start your shot, the colour is different, so even batch applying White Balance correction in Lightroom doesn’t help..
FWIW check out http://www.stepheneastwood.comDJHParticipantExpresbroParticipantVERY striking image. When I opened the page I went…Woah!!
I really like it too… even the strange catchlights from that ringlight…like little polo mints in her eyes… :D
seanmcfotoMemberoops, didn’t see the replies!
Cheers.
I’ve a few more shoots and shots from this session I should put up..hammermanParticipantExcellent lighting…heard and interview with this guy he uses something similar…think I got to look into this.
