Something I picked up today. It may be of ineterest to some folk here.
I am writing to inform you of the imminent closure of Peter Slattery Ltd.. T/A ?Slatterys? 52, Upper O?Connell Street, Dublin 1. We will cease trading to both the public and our trade customers on 23rd June 2007 due to the impending development of the ?Carlton? site ? where we have been located since 1946. Slatterys was founded by my late father Peter Slattery ?way back in 1936. A native of Fermoy in Cork, he went to London and qualified as a Pharmacist. On his return to Ireland, he was employed by Hayes Cunningham and Robinson in Henry Street in Dublin. He opened his first Pharmacy in Parnell Street, a second one in Fairview, and then opened Ireland?s first specialist photographic outlet in O?Connell Street in 1946. He was a prize winning photographer both at home and abroad and was the first to sponsor a major photographic competition for Irelands Press Photographers in 1962. We continued to organize and sponsor this competition up and until 2001. He gave of his time and knowledge by lecturing to photographic clubs all over Ireland in an attempt to share his love of photography with other enthusiasts. He passed away in 1984 after a short illness. Denis , my eldest brother, then took over as Managing Director from 1984 up to and until his retirement in 2001. Then the enviable task of steering the ship fell to me during a period which has been quite difficult due to the lack of retail ?footfall? during the redevelopment of O?Connell St. and the legal battle which has taken place in relation to the development of the ?Carlton Site?. I joined the family business in 1970 , with the intention of staying for one year (as you do)!!, Thirty seven years later, I feel I have served my time and I should now attempt to finally improve my golf handicap, until the Autumn at least ? Finally, I would like to thank you all you guys for your custom?. and more importantly, your friendship over the years. Yours sincerely Donal Slattery M.D
