Since Gunn’s uses only Rodinal Special for B&W film I think that some Agfa films are bound to deliver better results than the non-Agfa films I’ve used so far (T-Max 400 and Ilford HP4+ 125).
I’m dropping a couple of Agfa Portrait 160 rolls this afternoon and I would like to know which Agfa films you’d recommend me, based upon you own experience with Rodinal Special (if any) or any other criteria (please specify).
It would be nice to have a choice around each of ISO 100, 400 and 1600.
I asked them and I got to know two things:
1. they hardly get Agfa B&W film, so there is no point in choosing any Agfa film
2. they develop Kodak T-Max film by hand with Kodak T-Max developer, nice! :-)
Rodinal Special is a great developer and can be used on any film regardless of the make. I have used it on many films (Kodak, Ilford etc) and it works great. Just as I have used Tmax developer on many films other than Tmax films and it also works great.
Agfa films are no longer being made but Rollei Retro 100 and 400 are the same film just rebranded under the Rollei label. So if you still want “Agfa” films, get the Rollei Retro. Gunns will not have these films, you will need to get them online from retrophotographic.com or silverprint.co.uk or from the many US suppliers.
