I’m pondering a couple of options for a tele lens to go with a 50mm f1.4…

    1/ a Canon EF 70-200 L f4 IS + an extender

    or

    2/ a Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS + a second hand Leica 135mm f2.8 Elmarit-R or 90mm f2.8 Elmarit-R prime

I haven’t worked out if I have a need for a long zoom yet, but I do prefer using a prime.

    What do people think?

I have heard the 70-200 f4L IS is incredible. Some of the best glass Canon have ever produced if rumours are to be believed.

    That would be my choice!

    You’re probably right Steve…

    but option 3 would be…

    the 135mm and 90mm Leica
    +
    a 24 or 28mm Leica prime or a second hand 200mm f2.8 L USM II

Any one any experience of using a Leica lense on a Canon body? (manual focus and appeture wouldn’t bother me)

i’ve got the 70-200 f/4 (no IS) and have used it with a kenko 2x teleconverter with great results (esp. in bird photography).
i can post examples if you want.

Wouldn’t mind seeing what it’s like with the teleconverter

Just seen the reviews on Photozone and thw 70-200 L seems to outperform or at least match all the relevent primes.

sorry, i’ve only ever used the 70-200 with the 2x tc for bird photography in florida… all of the examples shot from a boat over the course of two days between the hours of 10-12 and are pretty noisy cause i was using iso 1600.
heres some examples with 100% crops below the full image (all shot raw):

sorry, i had to embed these instead of linking to them..

Most would reckon the 70-200 is Canon’s best non-prime lens. Beware the 2x. It has an awful reputation. I have the 1.4x mk II. It definitely softens photos so I limit my use of it to once every now and then. You also lose auto focus on all but the fastest lenses.

Fantastic shots Beth. Thanks for taking time to post them. Hopefully I can start to get the same performance out of the lens at some point (decision made, the Leica experiment can wait for the wider angles).

    Joe/Steve, Thanks for your comments/advice.

I have the 70-200 f4 (non is version), it is a fantastic lens. very very sharp and nice contrast too.

When i use it with the tele convertor (1.4 MkII) it does soften the image but sometimes within acceptable limits.

thats why I buying just a longer les

I also have the 70-200 F4 non is version and I love it.
Can say enough good things about it. Oh and the focusing is very quick as well

I have both the f2.8 and f4 700-200 (both non IS). I was loathe to get rid of the f4 because it’s so light and is so sharp. I keep it for studio work. While the 1.4 does soften it slightly, it’s still better than the natural softness in the 70-300 or even the 90-300. By all accounts the IS is better so I’d recommend that route. You cant really compare L and non L lens for quality. (that’s not to say there are no non L lenses that are great.. the 85 1.8 is fantastic for example)

there is some softening and quality loss, but much less than if i took the exact image with the 70-200 without the 2x tc and heavily cropped it to get the same picture as taken with the 2x tc. the 2x works with autofocus on my 70-200, my 17-40 (not a useful combo, but tried it for craps and giggles), and my 50 f/1.8. i haven’t tried it on my sigma 10-20.
i used to own the sigma 70-300, on a bad day the 70-200 with the 2x tc takes better pictures than the 70-300, on a good day it’ll blow it out of the water.

Dammit, I’ve been resisting the 70-200 f4 for ages. I can’t justify 2.8 as much as I would like to have it. I know it is the right lens for the money and def worth the extra over the 70-300s from Canon or Sigma. And f4 throughout the zoom range will keep things simple when shooting with my Vivitar 285. But I have to put it off another while yet….since I also have a MTB habit to feed.
