Sigma 30mm F/1.4 EX DC HSM & D200 Issues?
-
IOPParticipant
Has anyone heard about issues between the Sigma 30mm F/1.4 EX DC HSM and a Nikon D200? The DigitalRev site says (in very bad English) “Due to the combination of the Nikon D200 camera with this lens can cause improper exposure”
Dave
carlParticipantDave, dont know about the D200, but I have read about this lens having focussing issues with Canon cameras. Some people have had to try a few copies before getting a good one. This is obviously a no-no for you if you are buying from Hongkong. :?
IOPParticipantThanks Carl,
 That’s a bummer, so it could be a specific lens issue as opposed to a D200 issue. Mmmm!
I’ve recently taken delivery of the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 which is great, but the 1.5 crop factor brings it to 75mm, I’d like something a bit wider and with this 30mm lens ending up at 45mm (along with an aperture of f1.4!!!) I thought I had something good.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a lens in this range? I’ve checked the Nikkor catalogue and they don’t seem to have anything similar,
Dave
carlParticipantDave,
Isnt there a 35mm f2 in the Nikon range.
That would make a nice 50mm(ish) equivalent.
I know its not quite as fast but…….IOPParticipantI suppose I’m being a bit greedy here but I had forgot completely the joy that wide apertures bring to photography. The depth of field of the 50mm 1.4 has to be measured in millimetres! I’m not sure why, but the DOF between at f1.4 and f1.8 seems to be greater than at any other aperture. Maybe I’m imagining it :?
carlParticipantDave,
I could be very cheeky here and say get a Canon 5D and a 50mm f1.2
but that would be overstepping the mark a bit wouldnt it! :D :lol:IOPParticipantcarlParticipantHere is a shot from the 5D and a 50mm f1.4 shot at f1.4
(not quite sure what i was focussing on  )randomwayMemberThis is a 3d image Carl.
Dave, what about the Nikkor 35/1.4 AIS? Take a look at the choice here, useful site http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_wide.html
I’m using my manual Nikkors quite often as they are cheap and robust and the ones that I have give nice warm colours, which I like.

(not quite sure what i was focussing on  )Nice emotion in that shot Carl. I love those type of “grab” shots.
I had a good look at that link, randomway, thanks for that. It’s a great resource for Nikon Lenses, and he really likes the Nikkor 35mm f/1.4.
naturfotograf wrote:Critically sharp and contrasty images still can be had at f/16 with the D2X. Similar behaviour is seen on the D200
Digital Rev don’t have this on their site, but they do have the f/2 that Carl mentioned, this too seems to get a thumbs up too, although no mention of its quality on the D200. But at ?266 it seems a resonable investment. Anyone seen a price for the f/1.4?
Dave
randomwayMemberYou have to search quite a lot for the better classic Nikkor lenses as I see, they are sometimes hard to find on ebay. About the 35/1:2, here’s a test on d200: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_35_2/index.htm

That’s a great link. You’d be hard pushed to get a better verdict than this!

The Nikkor AF 35mm f/2D is a very decent performer and a worthy standard lens on APS-C DSLRs. The resolution figures are very impressive especially at medium aperture settings where the performance is as good as it gets on the D200. At wide-open aperture the borders could be a little better but that’s typical for lenses in this range. The level of vignetting is a little on the high side at f/2 but negligible beyond. There’s a moderate degree of barrel distortions but nothing to worry about in the field. Combined with the good build quality and fast AF the lens is surely one of the can’t lose options in the Nikon lineup.IOPParticipantrandomway wrote:

I’m coming around to the f2 version (thanks Carl and Randomway). ?266 seems to a great price for it new.
Dave
EDIT: Just bought the 35 f2 from the DigitalRev eBay Shop – ?281 inc shipping and insurance
randomwayMemberI’d agree that a new lens was a better choice in this case. Let us know how do you like it when it arrives…. Don’t forget to post sample photos.
