Took a bit of a long spin today, down around Wexford (SUCH a pretty part of the country) .. and somehow ended up at Hook .. the sea was amazing..

Nice sharp shot Lorraine, I like the composition and the sky is wonderful … was a polariser used?

Howya Lorraine, I’m surprised this hasn’t got more positive feedback than this. I really like the composition and love the cloud and sky. the lighthouse has a kina converging lines feel to it. It looks to be leaning into the picture. That aside it was defo worth a drive down the Sunny SE.

Thanks Dara – I definately used a polariser – but I also added punch to the sky in PS aswell.. polariser really helped with the glare on the sea though :) There’s even a teeny ickkle boat out there :)

Brian :) this was taken at the wide end on my 10-20 mill.. I tried to compose the shot so i wouldn’t get any distortion when i cropped for the image … but it didn’t quite avoid it – I’m sure I could straighten the light house itself but it has elongated the circular shapre of the lighthouse to an elipse … and I think that throws people off with this shot. Personally – I think its worth it ;)

    Thanks for the comments ;)

Thats gorgeous. I love the sharpness and vividness of this. The only way to improve it I can think of would be that possibly the lighthouse is a little bit distorted due to the wideness of the angle of the lens. It might be worth trying a version through the photoshop Lens distortion correction tool.

I agree with you Lorraine, this is most certainly a very, very interesting and classy image…you really gave that sky some punch!

Not much to add, great image.

The eliptic lighthouse does look odd, but I guess that’s what 11 mm do to lighthouses

Absolutely superb foreground detail, and that sky couldn’t have been
exposed any better. Elipses notwithstanding, that is one stunner.
Congrats on never failing to impress.

Gerard – Thanks for the tip – I had fiddled around with a couple of other shots last night and wasn’t happy with them.. I didn’t try it with this becasue I got sleepy and wanted to go to bed  All the same I think you are right – and I could use it to at least correct the “lean” of the lighthouse if not the elipse iyself .. I think Hauke put it perfectly – this is how a lighthouse will look at 11mm. :)

Pippatee – Thanks so much for the comment – I’m delighted you like this :)

Hauke – ;) succinct as ever ;) Thank you

Rob – you can’t fail to get something decent there to be honest .. Its such a hypnotic place, I’d love to get down there again when there is some real drama going on .. I might be developing a crush on lighthouses ;)

    Thanks again !

Being a Wexford man I think I can speak with some authority on the Hook Lighthouse. It’s been photographed to death down here. We tend to yawn and look to heaven when we see another one.
I like this one a lot. Nice job. Well done.

I’m going to risk being difficult here-
I photographed this myself, some years back,
and from what I can remember,
it promised more than it delivered-

Everything is done very well here,
    nicely composed, lit and exposed,
but somehow its not doing much for me-

    One thing might change that,
and that would be the chance to see all the detail,
    in a print.

That little boat, for a start-
and some of the textures in the rock and concrete-

And since I’m giving free advice,
this could be a good candidate for a conversion-

    100% crop?
at the risk of being even more difficult?

Thanks Eddie and Ossie ( sorry I missed you there for a mo :) welcome to the forum ) I appreciate you taking the time to comment – and I’m really pleased you like this one

JB – .. Your critique and comments are alway welcome … I’m happy to hear your feedback (selfishly because it usually helps me improve something :) ) – I’m usually the first to do a conversion but I’m trying to explore colour first for the moment – I barely resisted the temptation though… Let see what we can do about your requests .. here goes ;)

Hi Lorraine, nice to see a post from you again, they’ve been scarce.

As Mike said (Wexkel11) it’s yawn time for us in the South East but you seem to have made it interesting. I won’t go into the distortion as it’s been said.

Next time you’re down in this neck of the woods take a trip to Slade. It’s left at the roundabout at the end of the Hook peninsula and brings you down to a small fishing village with a ruin. It’s beautiful during summer evenings and a walk down along the coast is well worth it. And we all know about Loftus Hall that is crying out for a spooky image!

    Nice one.

    Thanks Alan :) Appreciated

I’m sure I’ll be making a point to get that way again – I missed Tintern Abbey aswell and its on my list :) West Cork is my favourit retreat place.. but I think I need to spend some time in that area.

Thanks for the tip – slade goes on the list :)
