Help…I came across that Mamiya Pro TL that was for sale on Irish Photo News yesterday…and I’m in two minds as to either go that direction in my work to proper medium format (cos it seems like a good deal) or to buy a Canon 5D come August for about the same price in the Netherlands….
I’d dare say that the Mamiya Pro TL would be more difficult to find again, esp at that reasonable price, than a Canon 5D. And knowing (and liking) the kind of work you do, to me it would suggest an opportunity missed if you went for the 5D. Who knows, a few (dozen? hehe) jobs down the road and you might be able to afford a 5D too, and at a better price. I’d follow my heart and only get the 5D if I saw a necessity for upcoming work, given that the 5D is still in production.
I’m not going to suggest which way to go; ultimately only you can make that decision. But in deciding which way to go, remember this – you’re not just buying a camera, you’re buying into a system. You will have to decide which system will be better able to meet your needs in both the short term and the longer term.
