"Darkroom Printing for Beginners" One day workshop
-
thefizzParticipant
I will be holding a one day workshop in Darkroom Printing for beginners on Saturday 25th August. This workshop is suited to beginners who wish to learn the basics of film development and darkroom printing. It may also suit those who have done darkroom work in the past but feel they may need a refresher course.
The workshop will consist of the following:
An overview of darkroom equipment and materials and advice on purchase of same.
A demonstration on film developing, followed by participant practice.
How to make correct Proof Sheets (Contact Sheets) from your rolls of film.
Making test prints and assessing them.
Dodging and Burning techniques.
Making the Final Print. Each participant will need to bring at least one exposed and developed roll of traditional 35mm black & white film which can be of any subject. For this you can use any film camera from an expensive SLR to a basic compact camera.
Please note that this workshop does not involve the taking of photographs or any camera techniques. Level of experience with cameras (film or digital) is irrelevant. So all you need to bring are some negatives and you can take a full part in the workshop.
All paper and chemicals will be supplied and full workshop notes will also be provided. The cost for the day is ?50 and the venue will be in Dundrum, Dublin 14, where free parking will be available. At present, I have five places free.
For further information, please post here or send me a pm.
AliParticipantEddieParticipantthefizzParticipantI just realised that this workshop date is clashing with the People’s Photography weekend so please bear that in mind.

ExpresbroParticipantI’d certainly like to try this. Be nice to know how to develop my own film if I ever wanted to. I assume absolutely no experience neccessary Fizz? Cos I don’t have any…
GrahamBParticipantCount me in. Just ordered my first film SLR. How strange does that sound.
I’m going backwards in technology termsAliParticipantLooking forward to this – of course, few drinkies after  hwaa hwaa :D Anyway, it’ll force me to go out and shoot a couple of rolls.
GrahamBParticipantthefizzParticipantHi everyone,
Thanks for your interest. Absolutely no experience required with any darkroom work, be it film development or print enlargements.
Peter
thefizzParticipantJust a reminder to please send your deposit as soon as posible to secure your place in the workshop. It is almost full so I need firm commitments.
Peter
thefizzParticipantHi Graham, can you let me know if you are participating in the Workshop. I haven’t received your deposit yet and I have sent a few reminders by pm without any response. Please let me know ASAP as there are other people waiting to take your place if you can’t make it.
Peter
BarkerPhotographicParticipantHi Peter,
I would love to hear how you get on with your Darkroom Intro day. As We are probably the last company distributing a selection darkroom gear and consumables it facinates me to see the profile of people involved.
Normally during the summer months Darkroom sales disapear (for lots of reasons: College is out, too hard to Lightproof a room, too hot etc.). I spent many years in a Professional darkroom and was happy to turn my back on it and never go back (Smelly chemicals, stained clothes, the preparation, the clean up) …. Until a couple of weeks ago on a Wet summer day when a customer came in, picked up some chemical and said he was going into the darkroom for the afternoon. Then all of a sudden ENVY hit me and I began to remember some of the joys of Darkroom work. The first thing that came to me was the couple of hours of solitude and peace you get in there. Then came the satisfaction of completing the cycle of creating your own print (No matter how good) – without a clever piece of computer software to “enhance” your work.
Perhaps I will get back into the Darkroom soon for old times sake and perhape even introduce my Teen sons to the “Black Art”. But for the moment I would love to hear what other people think about Doing things in a Darkroom!!!jb7ParticipantI loved the darkroom-
seeing people without pimples,
full of expectation-
and pictures as well-Even working on my own,
in the days before the instant gratification,
and the virtual dispenser of the computer monitor,
it couldn’t be beaten;
from hidden paper to a permanent print was a magic that is indescribable unless you’ve actually done it-I gave away my enlarger-
hopefully,
its understood,
it was only for an extended loan-j
FintanParticipantNice posts Paddy and Joseph. There is nothing but nothing in photography that compares with pulling a roll of film from the tank or seeing a print come up in the developer tray. Even people that have no great intentions of shooting film should do these courses, just to see what the hell the fuss is about. Peter Fitz knows his stuff and I’m amazed how cheap this course is.
