What scanner…!?
-
Jay KingParticipant
Just thought I’d post the question seperate to the Holga thread as it’s kinda getting off topic…
I’m looking to get a scanner to scan in 120 medium format negs… from my Holga.
I’ve seen it mentioned here that an Epson 4490 which is mainly for 35mm negs will scan them. I asked in Gunns as they have one in the shop window, and the lovely daughter of Mr Gunn said she didn’t think they scanned in then 120 format… but she rang someone and they said that the scanners DO scan them in… but don’t do them too well. Couldn’t give me any more info. This scanner is the cheaper of the two I’m looking at… almost half price.
The other is the Epson 4990, which specifically does scan in 120’s… but there’s a big price difference… it’s around ?500.
Can anyone suggest a scanner for me… be it if they know the 4490 works fine or something else… in the ?0.01 to ?250 price range… ;)
Cheers…

Have a look on ebay, sure you will pick something up on there thatw will do an OK job for cheap money
Jay KingParticipantCheers Steve…
but that’s the thing.. I was looking on ebay, and saw a few 4490’s etc… but just not sure if they do the job. I saw some other scanners too, but think they are just 35mm or else plain oul flatbed scanners…
I’d like to find out if the 4490 will do the trick… I’ve seen different reports on the net, but nothing concrete or any examples…

I have the 4990 , it was about 370euro + postage. A friend has the 4490. I checked with him this evening and he says it does 120 negs down to 35mm. It will do trannies, negs and prints. It actually does negs greater than 120 either 6*7 or 6*9. It should do the job. Try Pixmania their generally cheaper and they use good delivery service.
A scanner is not something i would buy second hand unless i got it very cheap where there is no risk.

Thanks for that Eddie… it’s a great help. I really wasn’t sure if the 4490 was able to scan 120s.
I was actually looking at the CanoScan 8600F… I saw it around and it specificially does 120s… Thing was anywhere I saw it online were in UK shops with no delivery to Ireland… so thanks a mil for the pixmania reminder – didn’t think of that.
I see the 8600F there for ?174 Inc. VAT !
Looks good to me…
EddieParticipantThat’s a good price and about as much as you should pay, i went a bit overboard on the 4990 but i intended to do some 5*4 using Polaroid 55. Have not got around to it yet but its something i would still like to do. Good luck with the purchase.
JimmyGParticipantJust today i ordered an Epson V700. 513 euro. It’s supposed to be the bomb and has an optical resolution of 6400x9600dpi. Best of the flatbeds, dedicated film scanners are a step above but too pricey for me. It’ll give very nice prints to 19″x13″.
I currently have a canoscan 8400f but am not happy with it. (i onlt have it a couple of months so don;t make the same mistake i did – buy cheap – buy twice!) Why bother shooting medium format if you get a file off the scanner that will only compare to a 6MP dslr file. I considered the 4990 but for the same price the V700 is generally considered better.
Here’s an interesting discussion on the V700 including a link to sample scans.http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00H7KA
