Not sure if this is a landscape shot or not
Ideas on how to improve this type of shot more than welcome
carrigmanParticipantIt is too dark. In your image editor you need to brighten it up a bit. In Photoshop I would use the Levels adjustment tool and drag the right slider way over to the left. I’d also boost the colours a little. Then I would crop the photo: I would get rid of the area from just above the two rocks on the lower right hand side. This would make for a much more balanced composition.
Regards,
John.
RavenAshMemberSlightly dark, plus there is nothing in the shot to draw my eye to when I first see it.
eg a boat on the sea horizon or a closer shot of the kids building sandcastles as a foreground.mylesrantsParticipanti think the exposure is dead on.
its ireland after all and 12 degrees C.
agree on image focus. nothing to draw the eye. needs a defined subject.good show

Madra RuaParticipant… I just had a look at your gallery and I think you are messing with us…
GrahamBParticipantBrighter NO
Tighter YESDrop it to Black and white, up the contrast and bring out some definition in the clouds.
Job done – save – print – sign – frame – hang – admire
andy mcinroyParticipantLooks a tad dark to me I’m afraid (99% of your luminosity values are under 140 !). Yet it couldn’t be classed as low key. Underexposed I’d say personally.
Strange, as Hauke says, you have some stunning, well exposed shots on your webpage. I’m not quite sure where this fits.
The composition too is rather weak with a distracting boulder in the lower left and a rather bitty foreground.
I don’t quite get it, sorry.
Andy
jb7ParticipantWell this one is nicely dividing opinion-
The brightness and colour is fine for me-However, I think the tones would work better without that 1cm bright strip at the bottom-
And if I were doing that I’d probably straighten and rotate the horizon-Good one-

andy mcinroyParticipantMarty,
I’ve done an edit for you but I notice that you’ve set edit to ‘No’.
Let me know if you want me to post it.

I think the same, he is messing! :D :D :D
MartySParticipantThanks for the feedback – I was in newcastle last wk and liked the sky and clouds, the weaving stream plus the wee kids on the beach. But haven’t really taken shots like this before so wanted to see how they could be improved in every way – esp compositionally.
Graham, I’ll try converting to B&W to see what it looks like…
Andy, Go ahead and edit the photo’s I put up – I’ll update that wee part on my profile… What do you mean by 99% luminosity values under 140?
Cheers
andy mcinroyParticipantOK Marty, Here’s an edit.
Perhaps the dark feel was what you were after. I’m not sure.
I’ve cropped this, brightened it, applied an S curve and done some localised burning of the lower clouds to make them stand out more strongly.
There is no such thing as the perfect histogram of course. High and low key images tend to be biased towards either end of the histogram. But the main point is that even with high and low key images there is generally a distribution tail into the opposite end of the histogram. But with your image, the luminosity values are nearly 99% under 140 and 100% under 170 which is why some people feel the image is dark. 255 of course is pure white.
I’m not saying that this is the way to do it. But to my eyes, this might be worth another edit.
Andy
MartySParticipantThanks Andy – looks a lot a better
There’s a lot to learn re editing photo’s – at the minute all mine are straight from the camera…
I must send you all my images for editing :D
jb7ParticipantI still think the tones are good,
although the colour could have some yellow and red removed-The bright strip in the foreground,
and the geometry of the horizon,
are the distractions for me-j
