Sigma 10-20 v Tokina 12-24?

I am investing in a wide angle lens for my Nikon D50 and am looking at the Sigma 10-20 and the Tokina 12-24?

Any advice regarding these lenses pro’s & con’s would be much appreciated!

    Cheers Steve

I have the Sigma, and I have it on my camera very very often. That’s an excellent lens and you’ll read and hear the same from everybody. I don’t know anything about the Tokina, so I can’t comment on that. Check out my landscape photos on my flickr site if you want samples. Good luck with the purchase!

    Ridiculously,
    I’ve got the Sigma 10-20,
as well as the Sigma 12-24.
I don’t know about the Tokina-

    If you’re only shooting Digital,
    get the 10-20.
you may as well have the extra bit-

If you’ve got a film camera as well,
I’d seriously consider the wider Sigma, the 12-24.
were it not for particularly bad flare when shooting with the sun or bright lights in the picture-
which can be most of the time,
    with that lens-

I second Randomways reply. I also don’t have a Tokina 12-24 to compare but following a magazine review of the 10-20 a few months back I purchased and use it very often. The review blew the others out of the water! The only concern with Sigma if you believe the reviews is with the Quality aspect and the risk of a bad focusing lens. I’ve 3 Sigmas at this stage and all are perfect (or my eyesight ain’t  ). (I have a 70-200 Tokina – it’s not the best built lens but does have great optics but the motor is tired and sounds awful :( )

So, it’s another vote for Sigma. Best of Luck.

    Alan.

I have the Tokina 12-24. I have never used the Sigma 10-20

The Tokina is an excellent lens i use it 90% of the time. Image quality is super. This lens was jointly developed by Pentax and Tokina hence why the Pentax 12-24 optically is identical only that the Pentax version is twice the price. The build quality of this lens is excellent. I am very hard on lenses as i do allot of climbing etc so it gets banged around allot.

Optically i think its as good as the sigma but from a build quality point of view i would say from past experience of owning sigma lenses that the Tokina is better. This lens is heavier than the Sigma. Tokina is an F4 lens throughout the range unlike the Sigma

All in all both are good lenses and there is no correct answer. If build quality is important buy the Tokina if price is an issue buy the Sigma

For sample pictures check out my photobucket site but this is not a good way to compare lenses to be honest. Also check out Ken Rockwells comparison of these two lenses (this guy is a bit of a muppet but have a read of what he says about the two)
    http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/digital-wide-zooms/comparison.htm

Just my 2 cents worth best of luck

PS: I got my Tokina on ebay (hong kong) for 380 euro new inc P&P and 20 euro vat. 600 euro in the shops in Dublin

also own the sigma 10-20, wonderful lens.
the autofocus doesn’t work with my infrared converted camera (i’ve heard of a few other ultrawide angle lenses that don’t work with ir converted cameras, not an issue with just that lens), but it works great on my normal 20d. i’m on vacation, for the most part i’ve left my canon 17-40L on my infrared camera and the sigma 10-20mm on my 20d.

I don’t own the Tokina, but from my experience with teh Sigma 10-20 I can tell you that those extra 2 mm are very useful.
More often than not with such wide angle lenses you wish you could go even further.

Just to say, the 2mm are a lot, Hauke is right. I have a Cokin P filter holder and find it a barrier when shooting horizontally (you have to go up to 12-14mm). The 10mm angle is amazing after you learned how to use it and you end up not wanting to zoom in even one millimeter. Don’t be afraid to pay for it, I gave ?450 some in Halls Cameras in Tara Street (I think). You can get it cheaper online in some places if you can wait…

Have just ordered it on line Stg?209 plus P&P, from Hong Kong have bought camera gear from them before and quick service usually 5 days, so hopefully will get to use it next week!!

    Once again many thanks Steve

Weighing in late here, more from a reassurance perspective. You won’t regret getting the Sigma (though I believe the Tokina is a fine lens too). I’ve had mine since Christmas and love it. There’s surprisingly little distortion at the wide end judging from fairly slight differences in the image after running it through PTLens

What about the build quality of the Sigma though ? I’ve not seen one but I was reading that its wasn’t the best.
I was thinking about the Nikon 12-24 but of course its pricey…

I had a sigma 10-20, its very sharp and the build is good. But i just could not get used to it, so i sold it on here and bought a 17-40L instead

Build quality on my one is ok-
not as good as the sigma 12-24,
but that’s an EX series lens, and physically larger and heavier,
    with a built in hood,
which seems to be made of brass or aluminium.

The 10-20 hood is a plastic bayonet thingy-
so I wont be dropping that one onto marble floors
    expecting it to survive-

If you can?t afford the Nikon and build quality is an issue get the Tokina 12-24 its built as well as the Nikon. Its Pentax glass in the Tokina also and has a constant F4 throughout the range. Focusing and zooming is all done inside the lens so the out side of the lens does not move making it very well sealed Really excellent lens don?t know why people are so horny on here about Sigma lenses. Sigma make some great lenses but so do Tamron and Tokina:-)
