kram9142Participant
Folks, I know this topic has probobly been discussed before so please dont shoot me down for reittereting.
I am upgeading from300D to Cannon 5D. For the kit I want, to buy in dublin will cost the guts of ?3K.
The exact same kit from the States (best buy camera) is working out arount ?1.8K after exchange rate & Tax is paid. How can thjis be or am I missing somthing here. Has anyone done this before and if so, did you have any issues.
Please your feedback is most welcome.
Rgds,
Max
OatesyParticipantI bought the kit in my sig from a company in america.. After the customs import duty tax (21%) grrrr it still ended
up being a few hundred euros cheaper than buying here.. No issues at all for me .steelydanParticipantWell the exchange rates for the dollar is good for the Euro but that does not answer the question.I always tried to figure that one out myself and got fed up trying.Just good old rip off Ireland. It would be far cheaper for you to get a cheap weekend to NY and buy your photography Gear and have a few days trying it out, than to buy here in Ireland. No offense to any of our sponsors here. Just watch out for customs.

I and family and friends have used BHphotovideo in New York to buy from P&S to DSLR , they are first rate. My advise is to get anything ordered sent Insured Mail rather than DHL etc..seems to be less problems with customs!!
And if you are ever in NY visit their store it is a photographers dream, and the most helpful & knowledgable staff I’ve come across!!

lahinch_lassParticipantJust a note for anyone that is buying kit abroad, when coming back it is better to declare the purchase and pay the tax, rather than risk getting caught.
And they can catch you years later too.
Heard one horror story from someone who’d bought a stereo abroad, and a few years later bought new speakers for it. When coming in with the speakers they were stopped, and customs were able to check historical purchases on their Cr Cards and found the stereo purchase as well so they got hammered with fines.
Remember the serial #’s on all your camera kit will always reveal where it was purchased and customs can always check whether there was tax paid on it or not.joe_elwayParticipantIf you are buying a pricey item over there like a camera body then beware the warantee stuff. I _think_ pro lenses have worldwide warrantees but not bodies. You can get a warantee (MAK?) in addition to the body that will give you support locally via an additional support chain outside of Canon. I’ve read on other sites that this can often be better than Canon’s own support.
kram9142ParticipantHi Guys,
Thanks for your relpys, very helpful.
The way I was looking at it was that with the strenght of the Euro against the dollar at the momonet the exchange rate negates the duty that you would have to pay for it. So you more or less get it for the price that is is being sold at.
Ossie13, I will google those places you spoke of, thanks.
I think im going to go ahead with it, just a bit more research now.
Once again,
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated,
Cheers,
Max

For the people purchasing from B&H and the like; do you always have to pays 21% VAT or do you get away with it sometimes and other times have to pay it? Is it always 21%? Do they ring you up and say you have to pay come in to collect your item and then pay the VAT or what way does it work. Thanks in advance,
Alan
