As I am very busy these days with my TCO’s and ROI with RAC, BC and MS. I dont have much time to relax (only when I am asleep) I e’ave a shortlist of DSLR’s that I would like to choose. I NEED YOUR HELP. From the following, select what I should buy and why. A creative answer gets bonus points. (budget is 1400)
Pentax K10D
Nikon D80
Canon 30d
alzaphodParticipantPolmac, buy a D80, simple reason? I have one, and everyone wants to be like me.
not so simple reason,
small light body
12bit analogue digital conversion
11point autofocus system
2.5″LCD
Very simple to use
Wonderful piece of kit altogether!richiehatchMemberWait a while and get the Canon 40D… looks like a fine bit of kit…! Also get into the shop and try them out… one might ‘fit’ ye and the other wont…!
Richie
alzaphodParticipanttis a sensible answer that man gives!
Im an impulse buyer, not prone to research Im afraid, thats probably my buying downfall.
When I want something I usually rush out and buy it, luckily the D80 worked out for me, even without the research.
Good luck with whatever u do buy tho m8!
AlanPolMacMemberI actually like the Pentax. I went into a well known city center camera shop who dont stock Pentax, but I wanted a non-biased opinion. What I did get was, a sort of warning that Pentax might go like Minolta… then the sales pitch appeared.
Some sales guys dont listen… but is it rumour…

I have emailed Pentax to enquire on this salesman perceived thought. I will update the blurb…
vtecMemberhave no complaints with my D80, i love it., although i havent used the other camras you’ve slected.,
PolMacMemberThe D80 and K10 feel quite solid in the hand. The Shake Reduction from Pentax would be of great benefit as I have some problems with tremors in my hand on bad days, not bad enough to shake a martini!!!
As I live in the sticks, I have plenty of opportunity and access to all kinds of plant specimens, insects, landscape and wildlife. Key things to me in a camera are:
Excellent lens quality and availability
Strong colours (Without playing with CS2)
Solid Build
MacroI am sure that Nikon and Canon easily fit this. Not too sure on the range of lenses on Pentax.
PuckpicsMemberbuy the one that has a auto dust removal system if you lack time… i have a Nikon but Nikon have not solved the dust on sensor problem yet.
andy mcinroyParticipantYou can pick up a K10D now for ?450
If you can live without the high speed shooting that the 40D will bring then the Pentax specs look every bit as good for a lot less money.
Consider
Fully Weathersealed, shake reduction on any pentax lens ever made, 22 bit AD converter. And if it’s landscapes that interest you, the dynamic range on the K10D pips the 1Ds MK2 and outclasses the 5D.

Great for seeing deep into those shadows. But at the end of the day, try them all out in your hand and see what works for you.

irish147Participantis a nice fast easy to use camera…very sharp, and works well in low light
Madra RuaParticipantPolMacMembertrailfoxMemberKeep to the market leaders: Canon and Nikon
Pentax may seem good for price, but if it was me I would me leaning towards the manufacturers with the most experience and best products: Nikon and Canon (especially canon now with their newest releases) have both of the wisdom and product line boxes ticked, so you’d be safer with them.Canon IMO, would be the market leader at the moment, with the 1Ds III, 1D III, and the 40d being released. They now have the semi-pro sector, the professional studio and lansdscape sector, and the action and sport photography sector covered with some very advanced peices of kit, So you cant go wrong there.
For you I’d say, go for a 40d a while after it gets released in september (or a 30d if you need it soonish), or if you really want to go with Nikon, a D200 would be the nearest equivilant build quality (magnesium body and not plastic). The 40d will be great for your motorsport ventures and also for your more delicate shots like potrait and macro etc. (what area of photography are you into mostly anyway?). But even though your megapixel count hasn’t got much to do with the good camera/bad camera regime, you will still have more than enough (even from the 30d) for editing and what not.
One more thing… what about your lenses? Are you going to go ‘body only’ and get good quality lenses or buy the camera/lense bundles?
But I am a Canon user, but an unbiased one at that
richie hatch is right too though, go to a good camera shop and try out a load of cameras, you never know whether you have Nikon hands or Canon hands until you try them out!Hope that helps :D
PolMacMemberType of subject matter:
The delicate type!!! Macro, although I do like landscape. The motor racing days are on hold.
To me lens quality is most important.
Over the years (27 years photography) I have had mostly Canon, the best to me was the T90 and A1, and I have also had Contax the 167MT, with a couple of CZ lenses.
I like a solid camera. I tried the Olympus E-410. felt like a dinky toy. I was thinking of a SH 20 or 30d and then get a good quality lens. Anything I would need to look out for when buying a sh DSLR….
