Work took me to Jersey again, and this time I managed to get away for a few hours to checkout Jersey War tunnels, the underground hospital built using forced/slave labor during German invasion of the 1940s. Wandering around the tunnels is truly chilling (literally, damp sort of cold) experience, especially if the place is not too crowded – I would suggest going there on a working day, during off-season/winter (if its open then, I don’t know)! They have done a decent job of presenting how the events unfolded during the occupation, the human face of the invasion, the social setup set, German soldiers amongst ordinary people, the hardships, food controls, how Germans fortified the island expecting an attack from the English, which never came etc etc – and they had loads and loads of stuff from the island under Germans.

Photography-wise, you have to have a tripod to get any decent shots of the long hallways, grim chambers, unfinished tunnels – which is what its all about really! I didn’t have one (excuses..), all I could do was shoot a few well lit items on the display shelfs with the nifty fifty – like these:

Overall, if you think of the world war itself, on a larger scale of things, occupation of Jersey was rather insignificant, uneventful, easy and one with a happy ending. However, being the most significant event in the history of the tiny island, they have done a decent job projecting that picture to a tourist.

Very interesting is right. The first shot being the stand out one of the trio. I just wish the first eye of the boot was in sharp focus!
    Very atmospheric all the same.
