Has anyone ever or have FWA – Fixed Wireless Access.
Is it worth the investment 700 for hardware and 40 per mth…
Have tried 3G only gpls #~&^%$?* or my superfast 28.8k
alzaphodParticipantid imagine it depends on how much youre going to use it to be honest..
have you tried.
http://www.broadband.gov.ie
supposed to be able to get broadband in all parts of ireland, though i know this isnt always true,
the site might help a little…
best of luck with whatever system you do get in..
AlanThorstenMemberI’m delighted to hear that I’m not the only person that finds it impossible to get broadband. Perhaps we could get a dialup user clique er, I mean group, started here on PI!
I’ve been using UTVInternet’s FRIACO service for the last number of years which means I have 180 hours of dial-up access for ?24.95 a month. 180 hours may sound like a lot, but when it takes forever and a day to transfer large files, I often leave something like that to happen overnight using up my hours as I sleep! I’m not even living in the stick’s, well, not quite anyway. I’m just on the wrong side of Cork Harbour!
Recently a small time operator has moved into the area offering 2MB wireless access for ?30.00 a month (and a ?180.00 setup fee) with a contention ratio of less than 20:1 and no monthly download limit. Now if only I could get hold of him! Apparently, it can take up to a month to actually get him around to do the installation and no, he won’t let me do the installation myself! But there’s no hope of getting Eircom to enable the local exchange 2 miles away for at least another year or more”!
I have to say that a setup fee of ?700.00 and a monthly subscription of ?40.00 sounds ridiculously expensive to me. At that price you’d want to be getting a blisteringly fast connection with a very low contention ratio and no download limitations! But I guess that’s what happens when there is no competition, people can pretty much charge what they like. Check the specs of what you’re getting for that.
PolMacMemberI am living down here two years now and unfortunately I am the last house on the line and was told that the line is too poor for DSL. I need broadband for my work. Project Manager during the day and Sys admin after hours. I am sure to get the jist I need a vpn enabled connection
The FWA connection has a download of 512 k and upload of 64k…. pretty bad. Satellite BB one way ranges from
mediasat 1024k download – dial-up upload. ?370 plus 40 per mth
to two-way
bently walker 512kbps down 128kbps up cost: ?86mth + hw ?960
If I need to do large up;oads or downloads I have a 4 mb link in work. Try using youtube at my worst connection speed of 9k

You’re joking!!! And they want ?700 to set you up on that!? Who do they think they are?
I’ve been very fortunate with my dialup connection. I spent several weeks tweaking my modem and now I regularly get connection speeds of 50.6kbps. Out of curiosity I just did a bandwidth test and got the following result:
PolMacMemberstcstcMemberhave you tried all the diff 3g broadband things
from O2, Three and vodafone
they all do braodband modems where the cost would be much less than the price you have quoted
I have a friend up in cavan, who cant get any of the regular broadband service, but she uses the O2 thing and she says it rocks.
trailfoxMemberIrishBrianParticipantI sympathize with you all I truly do.
On my holidays I have to use cafes to get internet access. When I quiz my cousins about internet access in Donegal they laugh out loud and point at the cows and sheep and say “What ever for, do we need the internet” :P
PolMacMemberHave tried Vodaphone 3G and got GPRS only, Have tried Onspeed which uses squid, slightly faster more Zm than Zoooooooooom.
In the end I might just go for ISDN… altough brittas bay just down the road have wireless BB. For work all I need is a terminal session. I must check can I use secure-id for a putty session…..
