The Gimp is an image editor which is available for free online. It seems capable of most if not all of the actions that Photoshop can perform, I just wonder if it can do them as well. I have used it a very small amount for cropping and some other minor editing. I have never used Photoshop as I haven’t really gotten into post processing yet. I’m really interested in learning though.
Just curious as to whether any post processing people have compared the two or just used the Gimp, and how did they find it?
Must admit, I never realised that someone had created a binary for the Windows platform. Thought it was Linux only. I do have both Linux and The Gimp but never really did anything serious with either – it’s more for the novelty factor that I have them.
I use Photoshop on my Mac and have The Gimp on my PC. You’re right, it does share a lot of Adobe features and is useful if there’s something I want to tweak on an image without changing machines. However I would strongly recommend PhotoShop as it’s user-friendly and a cleaner image-rendering process. The Gimp’s too disorganised.
I’ve used it a bit. The toolset is ok, but there are a couple of major problems with GIMP for serious use. Firstly there’s no support for 16 bit – everything is done in 8 bit, which seriously limits curves/levels adjustments etc. A 16 bit version is allegedly in the pipline, but it has been since 2002, so I’ve kind of given up waiting! The other big problem, and probably the clincher, is that there’s no colour management support at all.
If you’re on a budget, and just want to make some minor changes, or build up a HDR from layers/masks, then it’s OK
