Disposing of developer

    Hi,
This weekend I’m going to try my hand at developing a few rolls of film at home and I was wondering what the story is with disposing of the used developer? It’s not really something I can just pour down the drain is it? I’m living in Dundrum so hopefully someone knows of a recycling or waste management centre nearby. I’ve developed a couple of rolls in a gallery darkroom but they saved the used developer and had it disposed of “responsibly”.

    Hi Cian,
While I would not recommend drinking it (Don’t!) Developer is OK to put down the drain in Small volumes because it dilutes, the same applies for Stop bath. However Fixer when it is used contains Silver which, is classed as a heavy metal and does not dilute. I suggest you ask your local MiniLab owner if he will accept it to be re-cycled / purified with his used chemistry. Also Cork County council have a Haz-Waste van that visits local shopping centres a few times a year to deal with Waste paints, bulbs and Chemicals – from Householders only, so this may be an option?

Paddy is pretty spot on with his advice.

Ok, thanks lads, I guess in the volumes I’ll be using it’s not a big deal. Just thought I’d ask.

Disposing of small quantities of used developer should be no problem for a household darkroom user. I would advise storing in a container with lid off for a week or so [safe away from kids and animals] and it will be really spent.

Don’t dispose of unused or un-diluted developer in this way though, its a different matter.
