Nikon AF-D 80-200mm 2.8 and tele-converter

This lens is on my christmas wish list. I read a review on the 70-200VR which said it performed really well with a 1.4 teleconverter at 300mm. Just wondering if the same applies to the 80-200mm. Googling gave mixed information on the 80-200mm and teleconverters. Anybody have any experience of same?

I tried replying earlier but eircom had an issue and stopped me browsing :)

Anyhow, I have the 80-200 AF-D lens and its super sharp, well worth getting.
I had been thinking about the 70-200VR but after heading the reviews of the 80-200 I decided
to go for it and have no regrets. Note though that I didn’t try a 70-200VR, but you know
that 80-200 has done the job for many years over its many different versions.
Of course the 70-200VR is quite a bit more expensive than the 80-200 AF-D lens.

The 1.4 teleconvertors that Nikon for some unknown do not retain AF with this lens or any D lens for that matter.

I bought a Kenko 300 PRO DG 1.4 teleconvertor (Nikon version) for very reasonable money a couple of weeks ago.
This does retain auto focus !. It rates highly from review I read, plus other members experiences of it (brandyman).
I’ve yet to use it so can’t say how good it is. Given the alternative I think its a good buy and will most likely will
proof to be a good purchase.

End of the day its up to you :D

Thanks Mark. Glad to hear that. Was hoping the 80-200mm would make a reasonable 280mm f4, glad to hear the AF works with the Kenko. The 70-200VR is double the price and a being a G lens would mean I couldn’t use it on my manual camera as well. Was thinking about the 300mm f4 for nature shots, but reckon the range of the zoom will mean it gets used for lots of other stuff as well.
