I’m looking for a Canon 400d and wondering where the cheapest place to buy it?

Online will prob gets best prices, any suggestions?

This is the best deal I have seen so far: http://cgi.ebay.ie/CANON-REBEL-XTi-EOS-400D-CAMERA-LENS-4GB-6-BONUS-BLK_W0QQitemZ140164162477QQihZ004QQcategoryZ31388QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I am not a big fan of buying large expensive items online and no more so than from auction sites ( hope you scrolled right on down the page to where it declares that “This product is Canon Refurbished “A CLASS” to BRAND NEW Condition“, much prefer to hand over my cash after I have inspected the goods and agreed the price, and, should something go wrong at least I can call back to the shop and discuss matters face to face. To that end I would recommend paying a visit to or phoning John Gunn’s camera shop. They don’t have an online presence but I have found them to be the cheapest shop in Dublin for most items (consider my latest purchase of Lowe Pro Mini Trekker AW which was 20 yoyo cheaper than other vendors I had checked). Hope this reply is not out of bounds…….Mikka

Hi Mikka, thanks for your reply. I see your point on the online buying, but I’ve done plenty and it has always worked out well.

Actually I did not notice the fact that it is a refurbished unit, thanks for pointing it out. However would this really make that much of a difference? Better than buying used I think, as at least it has been professionally repaired and usually they are in “As New” condition after a refurb – it could have been something very minor wrong…

    What does everyone else think?

Why are you so sure you want a 400D? Have you been into a shop and handled one?
If so, why not buy it there? If not, why not buy a camera you can handle first?

I’d second Gunns, really good people, good prices, and very helpful. Having said that, the markup on all Canon gear in Ireland is outrageous (comparison from Technikdirect.de webstire the German RRP for the 400D is quoted as ?749, on Berminghams website, it’s quoted as ?939!), and local service or no, I personally can’t justify paying these markups. If Nikon can come in at something approaching the rest of Europe pricewise, and Sigma can even manage to sell lenses at the same or less than online, it’s curious that Canon’s cost base is so much higher .

So after that where to buy, you can find the 400D body only for ?546 after rebate from AC Foto. Then there’s always buying online from B&H in the US, or the Hong Kong ebayers, both of which will probably be considerably cheaper, but you’re liable for duty and VAT for anything from outside the EU. (if you do go these routes, look into a MACK warranty, as Canon’s protectionism extends to warranties, and they don’t honour US/Asian warranties in Europe and vice versa)

I’ve seen and used the 400D so I know it’s the camera I want. I do not feel the need to specifically handle the one i want to take home – it’s a mass produced electronic product – they should all be the same! Personally I am not prepared to pay way over the odds just so I can walk into a shop. I’d prefer to not have to make that journey at all, have it delivered directly to me, and save money at the same time.

As electronic equipment goes, I’d say a camera like this has a lower change of having a defect in which i’d need to bring it back – I think it’s worth the risk…

    Canon 40D (Body Only) ?339 = ?489
    plus
    ?70 cashback offer: http://canon20thanniversary.onlinerebates.com/howtoclaim.aspx
    ?589 – ?70 = ?419

    That’s value!

That’s not at all bad. They’re not already rolling the rebate into the price they’re quoting by chance?

Why not buy from B & H in New York while the Dollar is so weak against the Euro?
Even after VAT and Duty you should save money.

Good suggestion Rob but how do you fare out with power supplies and battery chargers being 110v? Are they wide range voltage chargers with Canons?

Good question Alan, never thought of that. I know the Olympus chargers are
wide range, but you’d have to ask a Canon user about the Canons….

That price for the “40D” above i think was supposed to be for the 400D, I knew it seemed too good to be true. As for B AND H did a quick currency converter on that and wahey it sure does work out cheaper. Time to see what deal i’d get on a 40D with a 24-105 F4 L IS USM lens methinks :)
