One from a river walk last Sunday. Converted to mono using calculations…

Finally, a resulting image from someone using calculations. I’ve seen this being done but never went through the pain of trying myself. It seems to have turned out well for you Rob.

The image – there’s always an attraction with things mechanical and the cogs here provide a nice contrast to the image. You’ve a very shallow DOF – purpose or design? The foremost nut is sharp but it falls off toward the cogs which I think should be the target but there’s adequate sharpness to hold it. Is this an old lock gate?

If you’ve more would you post them? Like I said, all things mechanical, B&W and old…

    Cheers for the comments Alan.

Yes, it’s an old lock gate on the Blackwater in Kells where they’ve diverted part
of the river into eel traps. I think there are three or four of them off the main river,
disused and rusted now as you can see.

The extremely shallow dof is intentional (I liked how it looked on my LCD) and yes,
I do have some more, but they’re on my home computer. I will post some more on this
thread for you later on this evening.

As for calculations, it’s no pain at all. It just a bit of experimenting to see what works
best – red multiplied by blue, green overlayed with green, etc. With mono conversions
I always try calculations first, and if I don’t get what I want out of that, my usual route
is to get the required level of contrast in my colour image first, and then add a solid
colour layer with blending mode set to colour.

    Thanks for looking.
