Using and SLR if you wear glasses

I just got my 400D – it’s my first proper DLSR. The first thing I noticed is the fact that I wear glasses and it’s a pain in the ass looking through the viewfinder! I’m short sighted (need glasses for seeing far away) however when I look through the viewfinder, all the details down the bottom are completely blurred to me.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

Am I right saying you can get an adaptor on the viewfinder to adjust to my sight? However I wear contacts occasionally so is it easily removable?

Have a look beside the viewfinder as there may be an dioptric adjustment knob there. If there is – look through the viewfinder and adjust until it suits your vision.

    Colly,

There should be a little adjustment wheel on the camera right beside the eyepiece to change the diopter setting of the viewfinder itself. Might be what you’re looking for? If it doesn’t do the trick you should be able to get a adaptor close to your prescription to fit over the viewfinder.

Cool! Thanks I just found it…

I’ve played around with it, and when I turn the dial All the way to the left, it’s much better. Although it is not 100% perfect, I can make out everything I need to. My prescription is about 2.75 / 3 – it’s not that bad but man I wish I was not so blind!

If the diopter on the camera doesn’t go that far then you can most likely buy on which will.

Do what I do: point and pray!
I have a PVD in each eye so that the view in the finder
is a swimming mist of murky blobs more often than not.
Manual focus is a non-runner for me.

Exaggerating aside, maybe you’d be OK with glasses that have
a higher field of view? I can usually get by and I’m -4.75 diopters.
I know photographers with -10 diopters who cope OK.

I wear specs also and didn’t bother getting a change of diopter as taking off and putting on my glasses
constantly between taking shots seemed like way too much trouble.

    I second Pete’s attitude!
It works most of the time!
