Just bought this bit of kit:

Tried it out in the garden for the first time, an awesome lens. The camera (EOS 1D MkII) is for sale on this forumn.

    Lovely lens, and great shots.

Just curious – where did you buy it and how much was it?

I saw one, 2nd hand, on ebay from a guy in Limerick, looking for ?3,800, but, I’ve also seen them brand new on ebay from HK for ?3,200.

I’d love to get one, but don’t think I have that money to hand right now.

The one for sale on eBay from Limerick was a pretty reasonable deal. Conn’s are looking for ?5,500 for a new one. You see them on eBay UK going for ?2000 (used) or about ?3000 new and as you say a new one from Hongkong is ?3200. The problem is that the shipping costs are pretty high. UR Galaxy, an eBay shop based in Hongkong, are supposed to be very good but I have never dealt with them. I was very impressed with your work on your web site. Thanks. John

I’ve bought from HK before (Kea-Photo, URGalaxy) etc and have never had a single problem. Shipping cost would be about the same as the price from Limerick.

    Thanks for the compliment.

I’ll just have to keep saving, and looking for a good 2nd hand lens for under ?2,500 .. or find a way to get the other money for a new one from HK.

    Paul,

I got my EF 300 f2.8L IS USM for ?2600 in the States second hand from B&H.

Love the lens, not too heavy when compared to the EF 400 F2.8L USM.

    Regards,
    Conor

I just got the 300mm f/2.8 IS L from HK. New for ?3,440 (inc shipping). I should have it in my hands after lunch today.

It just had to be done. :D

    Thanks though for the input.

Mother of God! Do you need planning permission with that??

Ah, it just looks big. :D

The actual lens is only just over a foot long … but, when you add the hood etc, it looks a lot larger. A powerful beast all the same. I took mine out over lunch and took a few photos. I’ll process later, and may post a sample. It’s a very sharp and fast lens.

    Great for wildlife and sport.

Just bought my second one on ebay, used from Japan. 1700 euros! I sold mine last year for 2000 sterling , but have missed it since. non-IS version, have used the IS one and it’s nice but didn’t want to fork out extra for it. Lovely lens for handholding…if you’ve experience with the 600mm gun!

Just one image I captured today (at lunch time) with my new lens.

Nice shot of the heron. It looks like I started a bit of a “must have a big prime L lens” syndrome. I have to say this lens is wonderful. Users on the EOS Forum claim it is the best telephoto available from Canon. I use it with a ID Mk II and a 1Ds Mk II. I am tempted to buy a 40D just to get some extra reach from the 40D’s 1.6 x sensor.

I’m borrowing a 1D MkIII for this Saturday, where I’ll be at the Leinster V Leicester rugby game. I hope I then don’t feel the need to buy either a 1D Mk II or Mk III. :D

The 300mm is a brilliant lens though. Super sharp. Can’t wait to try it again in low light conditions, where I’ll be really tested.
