Night Safety when taking pics

I was out in Galway city 2 nights this week, the first night a friend of mine who is 6ft2 and built like a brick house was with me as he has a digital camera and wanted to take some pics, however when we were in eyre square, some guy tried to rob his camera, ended up having to call the guards while my friend held him…guards were there after 15 minutes and took the would be thief away for the night..Then last night myself and a friend from college went out for a few more shots and I got the feeling that I was a walking target with the camera, anyone else have similar experiences or anything I should do for safety?

I would not take a good camera into Eyre Sq at night or indeed any city centre without a lot of friendly people about.
I’d avoid carrying anything of value with you at night if I were you …… especially if you are on your own.

That costs 16 grand. I’d feel pretty safe walking round eyre square with it.

All joking aside, sorry to hear about your misfortune Mono, and I would totally agree with GCP, city centres at night are not happy hunting grounds when you have expensive equipment such as the like of us do…

i go out with a a friend who is also taking pics. We take two heavy tripods.

One sets up with tripod to take shots.

Other stands ready to defend with the other tripod. A swing of steel manfrotto 55 is enough to deter most would be theives

On the rare occasions I’m going out with a camera at night, I either avoid populated areas or take only my camera with two lenses (one 50mm in the pocket, one 135mm on the cam) and try to dress in dark colours to be less of an obvious target.

If someone tried to rob me, I’d start to cry and ask for my mom, that would confuse the enemy…
