jb7Participant
from the 31.7 Nationals in Howth a couple of months ago,
that’s Lambay in the background-Although it may not look it,
this is a highly processed image-
(ok, maybe it does look it, does it?)Any comments appreciated-
j
sean1098MemberLooks good to me Jb,the sail’s fill the frame nicely.look’s like a good sport,do you sail yourself?
Sean.
MartinParticipantVery nice Joseph. Like the detail and colour of the sea and i think the picture is framed very well with the blue sail (don’t know the technical name) on the right giving the shot a nice touch. Only thing that would have been better i think is if there was more detail in the sky. You could possibly burn the mid tones in on it but this might be just my laptop screen. In print the sky might work though as it is.
O and i like the border you added i don’t think i have seen any of your shots with a border:-)
M
jb7ParticipantThanks Sean, Thanks Martin-
I do a little bit of sailing Sean-
or, pulling ropes and following orders-
Sitting out on the rail is another job I’m good at-
Its good crack alright-
you’re completely at the mercy of the elements as to what kind of event you have,
and it can get exciting, and even dangerous at times-Martin, there is more detail in the sky,
but it was behind me-
I was lucky in some other shots,
and got some nice light-
but this is the sports section,
and I just tricked you into thinking that this was a landscape-A lowdown dirty trick-
The border- I don’t do many-
but lighter toned pictures die against the white here,
so you have to do something-And that sky-
I”m not sure that there’s too much to rescue in it-
they’re mostly mid tones, and nothing else-
well, apart from a little bit I chopped off the top-Cheers for the comments-
glad you like it-j
sean1098MemberI can just imagine,it’s bad enough being out with a engine.Never mind out there with NO engine at all.

Sean
Now Sean,
if I were out on your boat without an engine,
I reckon I’d be a lot more worried than if I were on one of those above-
as long as it has sails, there’s your engine-And as long as you keep it away from anything resembling a contour line-
j
jb7ParticipantNot sure why (maybe I’ve seen Mick post a picture of a kite)
but I asked Mick to have a go at this,
and he kindly humoured me-I reckon he could charge a hundred quid a go for this- (special pi rate, of course)
Thanks Mick-
So about that kite-
if you had to put one up on the wall,
which one would it be?No pressure…
j
RobMemberExcellent.
I think I’d have to buy both, one for the sports room and one for the art room ;)
Super composition as usual Joseph, and beautifully timed; I can almost feel the
drag of that wind-filled sail. Mick’s version is astonishing, and instantly recognisable
as being his work (could there be a higher compliment?). I wish he’d give a
masterclass in the black art of processing….Great post Joseph…
Rob.
jb7ParticipantYou’re not allowed to have two, Rob-
you have to leave one for someone else-
I’m not made of prints, you know-Thanks for the comments Rob-
Now just be brave, and pick one-j
RobMemberWhat? Only one? But didn’t you know I was made of money…
If I was the sporting kind, I’d go for the original. Though I must
admit I have a preference for more sedentary sports, like chess,
or mahjongg for instance. I do love the outdoors, though I tend to
photograph it mostly from the driver’s seat of a landrover. You may
begin to see where this is leading…Rob.
Alan RossiterParticipantI like the original Joseph and I’ve viewed many, many times but I do feel there’s something bland about it. The colour of the spinnakers do add but it looks in some way lifeless. Maybe a push of contrast or is it just past my bed time? But I would like to see the original approached differently. How about a different framing scheme, black border maybe? That’ll help to draw the eyes in to the lighter area, ie, your image. It’s an interesting subject though. I’d like to see Rob attempt that from a Landrover. :D
Alan.
jb7ParticipantSo That’s one unequivocal vote for Mick’s from Rob,
and one for the bland one- Thanks Alan-This is the sports section,
but the comments about the sky seem to be landscaper’s crits-
What I’m looking at is the action on the decks-
difficult to see here, I know, but there are five boats rounding the mark-
and about thirty people, all working away-
some more frantically than others-There’s the two on the left,
heading over to the rail to fend off the boat coming in on starboard- GBR 73211,
while the helm steers away, and the other 4 prepare to drop the spinny in the sewerThe next boat is nicely around the mark, with everyone sitting out already,
the last man is just settling into place-IRL 1752 is just rounding the mark- and is turning up nicely
The spinnaker is collapsed, the pole is being dropped, and it looks quite organized-1679 has a temporary problem though-
and has slightly lost control of that kite in a gust-Its the activity that is the important thing to me-
all that space is a backdrop to that-
and the way it looks here is how it seemed to me out there-There will be other shots where the sky looks different-
This was a grabbed shot, (similar to your light on the Island shot Alan)
in that I saw this develop,
and had time to get off three shots
before getting up to help get our own spinnaker down-The first was out of focus, and one other was badly framed-
This isn’t perfect either, but I’ll just have to live with that-Thanks for all the comments-
Appreciated, as usual-j

Jez, Joseph, you know your stuff. To the uninitiated eye this is an image of 4 yots and 3 bouys. The action to land lubbers like myself is lost to your superior knowledge.
I agree, the activity is the key point. Whether it be the Rally of Ireland, the Tour de France or Crown Green Bowls or a race on the choppy waters of eastern Ireland. However, the presentation of an image in any field will be open to its photographic merits. I quite like your image here in what are very obviously difficult conditions. This would look quite well printed up to A2 and would gain admiration and that from the general public, not exclusively the photographic multitude. While presenting an image with a white border where the site has a white background seems to loose the impact it can have. And the sky is grand, sure wasn’t that the way it was??
Micks work is of his usual high standard, but this was your thread and I would like to comment on the original only out of courtesy…no disrespect Mick :wink:Alan.
jb7ParticipantCheers Alan-
My fault, you can’t possibly see all that at this scale-This is only a kindof a general arrangement-
It would be better bigger-
but don’t think this one will make A2-
I’ll probably give it a go at A3+ though-Thanks again-
though if I beat about the bush long enough,
I might find another vote for Mick-
Interpreting all these layers of politeness is a tough job-j
RobMemberFantastic commentary on the action Joseph; I almost felt I was there, and you
almost changed my fickle mind. It’s good to see other passions bubbling to the
surface every now and then. Good thread…Rob.
