A lovely new Canon 40D .. Just collected it from my parents on saturday, thank heaven for parents with their own business .. makes getting courier deliveries very easy.
Still nicked my dad’s Sigma 100-300mm f4 though, decided better to just get used to a new camera first before trying to get used to a new lens as well.

I took a load of photos during the match, but found reviewing them later that the focus point wasn’t always where I thought it should be, so I’ll be playing around with the focus settings next weekend. I’ll also be trying out an f2.8 sigma 70-200mm lens with it.

Great look’s like a great camera, did you have to bump up the ISO ,it was quite dull.If you did the result’s are top notch

The first picture in the thread was from the start of the match, and I used the basic sports mode option on the camera for the first half.

later in the second half at the other end of the pitch I switched to shutter priority

I do find the pictures a little desaturated straight off the camera, so they’ve all had a little post processing dialling up the saturation by about +10.
In the 2nd half pictures I’ve also played about with the levels a bit. Not sure how they are appearing to others looking at them now.

The first pic is stil the best in my opionon, but the other’s are still good, not as sharp,a bit noisier.

The 6fps must be great to use,you will not miss much action with that.cant wait to get my d300.

hmm just thought I’d add this one to the thread as an illustration of what could be done with a consumer DSLR – Minolta Dynax 5D with the kit 75-300mm lens (f5.6 300mm)
This picture is from Wasps v Munster at the Ricoh Arena, at night time, so under floodlights. I was using shutter priority 1/160 & iso 400. There wasn’t much post processing, just pulling in the levels and removing a colour cast.

Some nice images there. For rugby (and sport in general) you need a shutter speed greater than 1/400 to freeze the motion.

Shutter priority, with a high ISO tends to work.

I always do some processing on the PC after, so tend to give them a little more saturation. But, it really depends.

Good points paul.. I can go higher on the shutter speed when I’m using a faster lens, but on the minolta kit, I’ve tried going for a faster shutter speed when under floodlights in the past, but even with post-processing the pictures come up way too noisey, and iso800 in those conditions also caused massive issues. The ROG shot from the ricoh arena is about typical of what I can get using the minolta and f5/.6 with a shutter speed between 1/160 and 1/250. anything fater than that and the post processing cant compensate sufficiently for the lack of light.

The pictures with the Canon from Sunday I used 1/500 shutter speed when I switched to shutter priority and iso 800 to 1000.

It’s never easy getting the right combination to give you good quality images and also a fast enough shutter speed.

I try to get 1/500 or faster now, but that’s using ISO 800 or higher in low light conditions. But, remember, noise isn’t always that bad. It can add character.

If you look at images from Inpho or Sportsfile, the images can contain a good bit of noise, but are still good enough for print (papers, programmes etc).

Heres an attempt by myself at the dragons last night. I found myself using Tv mode and aiming for a shutter speed of 1/250 to freeze the motion. I need higher dont I. Was using ISO 1600 to achieve the 1/250 without the pics being way to dark. was using a Canon 70 -300mm, f4.0 – 5.6.
