Raw converter

I have just bought the Nikon D300. I upgraded from the D50 (it wouldnt be me to do it in stages)
Anyway when I uploaded the pics from the compactflash to my computer I discovered I could not open my raw files even though I have a raw converter downloaded on my Adobe photoshop CS2.

Thats the first problem. The 2nd problem is that I downloaded the trial version of CaptureNX that comes with the D300. It changed all my jpeg icons and Nef icons to ‘CaptureNX files’. As I hadnt a notion what was going on I uninstalled the Capture NX again then to discover all my Nef files have lost there original blue look and will not open.

Anything I have saved as a PSD is ok but is there anyone out there that understands anything I have said ??

    Help !

You will have to update the Raw Converter, go to Adobe website and download the latest version which will have updates for new cameras such as the D300!

The latest Adobe Raw converter is only supported by CS3, so you may not be able to use CS2 for your raw files. You may just have to use the Nikon software that comes with your camera.

I’ll back up what Paul says. I’m in your situation with a 40D and CS2. You’ll have to use Nikon software, buy CS3 or Lightroom or some other 3rd party RAW converter that has been updated to work with your D300 files, I’m sure someone more knowledgeable could suggest something.

You might be able to convert your files to Adobe’s Camera RAW format (.DNG) files and then use these with CS2. Haven’t tried this yet myself yet, it may or may not work. Even if it does work it’s a pain adding an extra step.

If you right click on any of the icons and go to open with… and then browse.
Choose the program you want to open the file with, then at the bottom of the list there is a box that says Always choose this action or something similar.
Tick that box and click ok, you should then be able to open all files of the same extension (eg .jpeg) in the program you just selected.

Comedy Chap, I have been having somewhat similar problems for months when trying to download from my D80.
Zoombrowser worked for a while but then would download some, or none, and everything would freeze up and I’d have to restart the computer. I tried everything. Elements, Picassa, etc, all failed.
The I noticed that it was becoming a bit difficult to get my SD card out of the cardreader [slot in front of laptop] so I tried a plug-in cardreader and it seems to work!! I hope I’m not celebrating too soon….
