Have one and like it. One of my first lenses I ever bought (well, first was a 70-300 super cheap as I could get).

I still use this a lot. Sometimes I’d like a little quicker, but not often. I’ve used on on 350D, 1dMII and 5d, and it’s different on each, but still good.

I’ve a sigma 20mm/1.8 which is just as good, but fixed focal length. if you have a 24-70 or 24-105, then the sigma 20mm is a nice addition.

Just picked up a 1d mk11, and went out with my Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens, experienced some serious vignetteing. So, looking for a decent wide angle piece of L glass.

17-40mm looks tempting, as does the sigma 20mm/1.8.

the one to buy is the 16-35 MKII, but its mad money, i have the 17-40 and its a nice piece of glass, but the 16-35 is much sharper to the edges

Thought as much. You gets what you pays for.

in saying that, the 17-40 is a mighty fine bit of glass and much sharper than what you would see in a lot of consumer glass.

but if you really want the best buy the 16-35

Bought my 17-40L secondhand and it was worth every penny. Dunno if I’d drop for it new (cos I’m very poor) but it IS the cheapest L lens, and deserves the designation. Very fast and accurate focus, great colour and contrast, built like a tank, sharp enough for most people (mine’s still good to the edges on a 35mm EOS 50e and great on the 30D).

    Hi

I sold my 17-40 and replace this lens by 35mm L 1,4 and this is top of the range lens.
17-40 is OK for this money , good for day shooting fast af and quality of glass nice to but f4( for me really dark).

I will go for this lens 16-35 if you are looking for zoom lens .

Yeah, the 16-35 looks like the lens to go for, but just cant warrant spending that amount on it yet. Think I’ll bump for the 17-40 and see how that goes for the time being.

I bought a 17-40 abought six months ago on this site and to say I am mad about it is an under statement it lives on the front of my 400d good contrast sharpness and most importantly it always hits the focus I use mine a lot for landscape /walkabout shots so the f4 isnt a big problem for me.
