Well after dishing it out, I guess it’s my turn..
This is from the the first planned nude shoot I did. The model does life modeling and had pose for me before doing tattoo images.
We got talking one day and she was keen to do some nude work in the photo realm as well as the drawing realm.
I did 4 light setups, somethings worked, some didn’t-I just was trying stuff with bare flash that needs more fine tuning.seanmcfotoMemberThorstenMemberseanmcfoto wrote:
Anyone?
Patience man, patience  It took almost 24 hours for any reply to appear to my first image post here, that’s just the nature of this forum. And I think images here are such that they deserve a considered reply rather than an instant emotive response, valid as that may be. But I like to look at the images here and chew them over in my brain before commenting. I suspect the same may be true for others.
I noticed this image earlier today but couldn’t really view it in it’s entirety because I was at work so I’m really only getting to see it properly now. Right now I can’t quite put my finger on it, but for some reason I’m not totally comfortable with this image. Perhaps it’s the fact that I can’t see any of the subjects left arm or perhaps it’s the hint of a tattoo I see coming over the top of her left breast, wishing I could see more of it or none of it. Personally I find the lighting a little hard for my liking, but that’s not to say it’s wrong or poorly lit, just expressing my preference.
Sounds to me like there’s potential there for a lot more great images, seeing as she’s a life model, although unlike drawing or sketching you have to physically create the light you want, rather than imagining it and putting your thoughts on paper.
seanmcfotoMemberTattoos are elsewhere Thorsten, and I’m shooting with a very close softbox, so there’s no way to acquiesce to your requests, as they are already fulfilled. The shadow transfer is obviously soft, so I can’t imagine where you see hard light. If it were hard, there would be a definite line, which is not exhibited in this particular image. I did shoot a number with hard light, but only one or two worked, I probably won’t show these until I perfect it better.
The irony in the arm suggestion, comes from my favourite nude of yours, where there is no arm visible in an equal manner ;-)
The tattoo impression may be from the stray hairs. I encouraged the model to tie them up at numerous points. Unfortunately, like 3 year boys, they wiggled their way loose, to the discontent of all. Myself included :)
As for patience, as Damien might say, give me some of that sweet patience, oh Lord…
And as for creating light? I can do that. Drawing on the other hand…
Thanks for your time.. and patience…
I’ll post more from the session as time passes. I’m already planning the next one.
AllinthemindParticipantHi Sean,
I think with these bodyscape style of shots, it’s worth considering them as abstracts, the lines/shapes/tones etc. If you can somehow get some emotion into them, then great. With this shot, I’m not drawn to any particular area of the shot, I like the way the bodyline leads out bottom right, but the boob in the middle-top is just a bit too “central” and in your face. Bare-bulb work is great so long as the reflections from the studio are contolled. Apologies if the critique is a little harsh, there are a lot of shots like this around and it’s worth reviewing them and finding what it is about them that works.
Si
ThorstenMemberLOL about the arm :D Too true, I think we often see things in other people’s images that we wouldn’t see in our own (well, I do at least!) and I think if I critiqued my own images as harshly as I critiqued others I’d probably never post anything!
Can I ask, was she holding her arm outstretched above her or did she keep it down and swing it back behind her shoulder?
seanmcfotoMemberSi, like I said to Thorsten, this image is not a bare bulb image. It’s a softbox close to the model, coming from the right back corner. I also said I wouldn’t show the bare bulb images, I shudder to think the reception I’d get!
I just like the diagonal in the image, but for some it may be too much of a lean. As for the harshness? I’m a big boy. I’ll get over it. I may sob in my beer first though ;)Thorsten, re the arm, I can’t remember, because we did both. Looking at the surrounding shots, I’d guess behind on this one. At the start of this section it was behind, but by the end it as up.
I’m also looking to see how much hair was in the shots, because it’s much more distracting in others. I think I’ll have her tie it up in the next session.ThorstenMemberseanmcfoto wrote:

Oh, go on, surprise us :D

Yet another reason (apart from rain showers) for carrying a shower cap in your bag
Why not let the hair fall naturally and use it as part of the composition?seanmcfotoMemberLucParticipantThe diagonal, yes, I like it as well.
But, IMO, the left part does not bring much to the photo and I would see a 2 cm crop of it, just to bring the left breast more to the third than in the center.
The light is nice with good relief and sharpness.
