Canon symbols

Hi Folks
Getting into photography. Been doing a lot of reading up on the basics. Simple question: What’s the difference between the symbol ‘P’ and ‘Auto’ on Canon powershots? I understand Tv and Av.Cheers
J
PeteMcDMemberNow, I’m not sure on the ins and outs of the powershot; I use a 400D. But this should be a guide to start on
Auto is full auto everything – aperture and shutter speed as well as focus points, white balance, ISO, focus mode, flash.
P is ‘programmed automatic’. The camera will only set the correct aperture and shutter speed. The other settings are all adjustable by the user.
Close enough?

That sounds about right, makes sense. Thanks. And you have the 400D. That’s the one I want ! I checked it out and it seems a good next step when I’m done with the compact camera. Powershot A 570 has a lot of features more than the usual for the price but just good for getting into this not for any bigger projects. It has full manual control so I can get the basics down. Can’t afford 400D yet. I reckon it’s upwards of 800 euro.
J
PeteMcDMemberYa, the 400D is grand. Should be able to get one for less than 800, if you look around. Sounds like the powershot does everything you need. The 400D just makes it easier to access all the controls…which is nice, but by no means necessary. Sounds like you’re on the right track. Looking forward to seeing some pictures!
PconstantineParticipantYou’ll pick up a second hand 350D for an awful lot less than 800 euro. Great camera, great to start out on.
JamzkyParticipantCheers.
I’ll certainly consider the 350 next time my wallet is in a good mood. I still haven’t got the one I ordered actually, the powershot. Should arrive any day. I’m impatient to start experimenting.J
PeteMcDMemberAnd you’ll pick up a 400D for less if you hold off for a bit. An upgrade can’t be far around the corner. The bigger screen on the 400D is well worth the price difference for me (since I have to chimp so much!!)
petercoxMemberI wouldn’t hold out on getting a cheaper 400D – there may be an upgrade to it soon, but then again there may not. It’s only been out a little over a year. The 350D is a very capable camera – only thing you’re really missing out on is a bigger LCD on the back and the sensor cleaning, neither of which should be a deal-breaker.
Cheers,
Peter
