Just found a lovely deal on a Canon 1D MK II for ?900! Only problem is the shutter has fired 140,000 odd times. Soooooooo should I take the plunge and go for a pretty heavily used 1D or go for a brand new 40D?

The 40d is much lighter, the technology in it is newer and it can serve you for life if you treat it well… not sure why would a 1d be better. And that price looks very low.

I was very surprised by it myself, seemed too good to be true and as they say if it seems to good to be true, it usually is. I rang the guy and he’s a pro up in Sligo, seemed like a nice fella. He just got the MKIII so he’s selling the MKII. The number of shots taken is quite high, not sure if that’s the only problem with it. The fact that it’s a 1D is what’s exciting me but yeah I do think the 40D would be a wiser purchase.

I would be the same sancho. The 1D would get the old juices flowing, but my head would say the 40D,a much safer bet,and as randomway says the technology is more advanced.

I am a “dyed in the wool” series 1 user but the number of actuations is very high. It is getting close to the point where it will need refurbishing. Go for the 40D. I have one that I use just to get the extra reach with 1.6 x sensor. It is agreat camera, not as robust as the 1D MkII but the image quality is great. There are good deals form 7day shop and dabs.ie

I have used both these outfits and have had great service. These prices are pretty competitive with those in the US and you have no worries regarding VAT.

Fantastic info there John! Hadn’t heard of those two shops, i was lookin at American sites which although cheaper for the product, once you add shipping and the potential of customs getting their hands on it, it would probably cost more. Tekmo.co.uk used to deliver here free but they’ve gone UK only. Those Feckers! :D

If you need a solid, rugged and totally pro camera I’d go for the 1D and just stump up for the new shutter, either immediately or when it fails if you can afford to be without it unexpectedly. But I’ve bought pretty much all my stuff used and haven’t had any bad luck (yet!)

Look at it this way, the 40D is a brand new buy.. no milage or baggage and a brilliant camera. The other has milage and God knows what baggage.. do yourself a favour and get the 40d..and enjoy it because in the long run the other could cost you more money.

Best of luck with your decision.

Aye the decision is made, 40D it is. I’m a bit too young to have a 1D I think. I’d feel a bit weird, like the 12 year old child who’s made ruler of his country. So i’ll make do with vice president for now :D

From dabs.ie as kindly suggested by John above. Total price including delivery for a 40D body only=?1,060. Not bad at all, certainly better than the high-street price of ?1,299!

ah yeah i might order it from there as well… not sure yet, i looked in to getting it from korea, but im not too sure if i’ll get fined for VAT and Customs and stuff…

I’m pretty sure you will, the only way to escape it seems to be getting someone to bring it back opened up in their luggage as if it’s theirs. So if you know anyone heaading to Korea give them a call :D

I got my camera from here. I think they’re French. I didn’t get any extras after what I payed online and after a quick (very quick) analysis, they seem to be cheaper than dabs.
