Bit of a missed opportunity here flopsy.

Having half the image black is a no no, because it provides little interest in half the shot.
Because of the darkness, the camera’s meter has been fooled and overexposed the top of the image.
If you’ve aimed up so the black strip was along the bottom, it would’ve exposed better.

You’ve also cropped off the tree, which would’ve made a great focal point.
If come across a similar situation again, raise the camera and include the tree.
If you know about ‘Rules of Thirds’, the tree should be on the bottom right third, if not google it
for a much better explanation that I can write in a short post.

The 2nd image doesn’t improve matters.

Hope this helps you in your quest for better photos.

It certainly does. I took a couple of pics of this and I pointed up but I just didn’t like it for some reason. I strangely preferred this one. I know what you mean about there being too much black and I only noticed it after I posted it. Haha i just tried cropping and that didnt even help. I think this one is a total lost cause. I still got some good shots from the walk home today so all is not lost. Thanks for the advice bout the Rule of Thirds. never heard of it before so ill look into it.

Rule of thirds is a good starting point for improving composition. It’s not gospel for every shot, but it does make a difference, because you start to think more about composition.
