Purchasing from abroad.

munsterman28Participant
Ive been looking around at the Canon 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM.
Prices vary considerably from 2500 Euro in cork, 1990 euro in Holland, 1900 in Germany, 1670 euro in the UK and an amazing approx 1300 euro in the USA.
Has anyone bought from the good old USA before. I realise they would declare it to customes or whoever when shipping so would get caught for tax so I guess id have to get it ‘picked up’ for me
ThorstenMemberThat’s a crazy (although not unsurprising) price in Cork. Even if bringing it in from the US and paying the VAT and duties on it, you will still save a substantial amount of money (although the UK price looks very tempting – who is that with?)
munsterman28ParticipantUk price is with warehouseexpress.
Checked two US online store and both had same price,
Rang O learys in cork last friday for the craic. Your man kinda seemed to pick the number out of his head
paulParticipantI bought the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L this year on ebay, from Kea-Photo. Worked out as a very very good price.
munsterman28ParticipantThanks Paul, I’ll take a look.
Would you recommend this lense based on your experience with it?
think Im goign to go for it and get an extender aswell. I want it for wildlife and sport. Anythign else is too heavy and more importantly too expensive
paulParticipantThe lens is just brilliant. For sport/wildlife it’s a good fast lens. It is a bit short for wildlife, but it really depends on what you’re after.
It’s supposed to be the 2nd sharpest lens that Canon produce (behind the 300mm f/2.8), so it’s a fast and sharp lens that is not very heavy.
markcapilitanParticipantSweet lens for sure, but certainly not Canon’s sharpest by any means….F4 model beats it for sharpness, best not even mention the primes! For sure, US prices are fantastic with the dollar being weak.
munsterman28ParticipantmarkcapilitanParticipantYep, and the non-IS too. If you absolutely dont need F2.8, I recommend the F4 IS version. I’ve used F2.8 with & without IS, and I swing for the F4 now I work for myself (I have both F4 versions). If you need F2.8 well theres only 1 choice, but yes the F4 version is sharper IMO and opinions of loads of others too. The techy part probably has to do with the flourite element in it, that the 2.8 version doesn’t have…. ProinsiasParticipantHi Munsterman,
Sorry if I’m coming late into this conversation but I know what you’ve gone through! BHphotovideo in New York were one of the cheapest alright, but don’t make the mistake of taking the price with the rebate off it as it’s not available to international customers…. It’s in the Small print. If you haven’t purchased already, have a look at this on ebay. Just type the following number into ebay’s search engine 250203904193 . It’s the lens you’re looking for, for 1370euro with free shipping. although, whilst they are an Irish seller based in Athboy with 100% positive feedback and the feedback score being 270, the lens will be shipped from hong kong. It would be no harm to ask them though if you’d be liable for customs……. That I haven’t done! Also read their feedback in detail as I myself have NOT purchased from them.
Better again though, if you know someone visiting Bangkok on holiday, the lens can be bought for 1150euro from a canon dealer there. I’ll have mine soon and can let you know how it goes. I don’t know, maybe someone else might have a tale of woe going this route that I’m pursuing.
best of luck though, let me know how it goes..
regards
ProinsiasmarkcapilitanParticipantYou can use the rebates for US Canon lens…as long as you know someone over there who’s address you can use. I always use a relatives address, and always get a cheque back…sweet!
