A great place to start is the Canon Lens Work III book, which Canon have now made available on their website. They’ve broken it down into 11 PDF files (totalling 32MB) which you can download from the Canon Europe site here.

I don’t think there’ll be too many sites which state what lenses are good for what subject…everyone’s opinion will be different. Some of my best landscape shots were taken with a 500mm lens, not what you might consider a landscape speciality lens. Again some of my best F1 stuff was taken with a widey. It depends on the photographer really, and the situation their in.

I agree on Lens Work – it’s good lens porn if nothing else. I use http://www.the-digital-picture.com for my lens research – great site.

In terms of context all lenses can be used in almost all situations. I have a 100-400mm zoom that gets most of its work in shooting landscapes – for example:

Both of the above were taken at 400mm.

    In general, though:
12-24mm – Landscape and architectural work.
24-70mm – General use, the longer end of the range is getting into portraiture territory. Poorly suited for wildlife and sports.
70-200mm – Portraiture (yes, even at the long end), landscape, macro (where you don’t want to frighten your subject off by getting too close), sports where you don’t need a lot of reach. Good for weddings where you want to grab candid shots from a distance.
    200mm+ – Wildlife and sports

As has been said, this list is neither authoritative nor exhaustive, but should give you an idea of what ranges get used in most situations.

    Cheers,
    Peter
