Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 — OR — the new 24-70mm f/2.8G?
-
bernartParticipant
hello to all,
I saw that Nikon has just released their latest lens the 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S NIKKOR at a price that is slightly more than the older 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S NIKKOR. I have a simple question to ask, as I am considering to buy one.
Would it be worth the wait to get the newer lens?
It seems that the new lens has a “nano crystal coat” and a slightly different wide angle.
Apart from that there does not seem to be a lot different. The SWM could have been updated as well, but no info from Nikon on their website…I will appreciate any help.

I forgot to mention that it will be used with the D3.
I have the new 24-70,actually its my second.but thats another story  .I have the lense about 5 weeks and since i got it, It has not been of the body. Its quite, super sharp and very quick to focus..Im no expert, but i think its a great lense.
I was using a sigma 10-20 for landscapes etc,but its just gathering dust now.Great lense for portraits aswell.

Paired with the D3 it could handle anything.

pete4130MemberI’m using the Sigma 24-70 2.8 on my D3. I haven’t used the Nikon one yet. On paper they seem similar. Both 2.8, both have almost the same minimum focusing distance. I argued in my head should I get the Nikon or Sigma and for what it was worth I couldn’t justify spending an extra ?1000 on the Nikon version.
The Sigma is nice and wide. You’ll appreciate the extra width over the 28-70. I find the focusing distance still be to a bit big for my style, but neither lens would resolve that.I took 2 shots today to show someone what DoF was all about and I did notice that at 24mm 2.8 at the minimum focusing distance there was noticeable vignetting on the Sigma. I don’t know if the Nikon lens will suffer from this though?
I think it comes down to what you shoot. Do you need that extra bit on the wide end if th 28-70 happens to be a sharper lens? The 24-70 does have a larger range to cover so may not be as sharp as the 28-70?
This makes for interesting reading too

For now the Sigma suits me fine. It gives good results but I can see myself upgrading to Nikon lenses in the future.
If you haven’t got your D3 yet, it’s fantastic to use!
jb7ParticipantIf the new one is in the same league as the new wider zoom (Nikon AF-S 14-24 mm, both announced same time)
then it should be worth waiting for-http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/nikon_14_24mm_1/nikon14_24mm_a.html
I’d say wait-
CianMcLiamParticipantIf you are planning on doing landscapes with the 28-70 it’s worth bearing in mind that it is notorious for flare and ghosting when facing the lightsource/sun whereas the new 24-70 has nano coatings that are supposed to eliminate this. Maybe the guys who have the new lens would care to comment on its performance in this regard?
MartinParticipantHave a look at Bjorns review of the lens on this page. He has a reputation for good lens reviews. I’ll be upgrading to this lens my self during the summer

If you can afford it and don’t need a fast med zoom today or tomorrow, then the answer is yes, get the 24-70. Why wouldn’t you?
Bottom line is the 27-70 is better in many ways than the 28-70, maybe in every way. You invested 4500-5000 on a top end camera, why not buy the best lens you can afford for it?
If budget is a concern I’m sure ebay will be filling up with 28-70s possbilby offering some savings on a used one. I have a 28-70 myslef, and would highly recomend it, but not over the 24-70.

bernartParticipantThank you all for helping me out. I will go for the 24-70 in the end.
BTW, I am very impressed with this forum, a lot of good advice and excellent response time.
easParticipantwell done Bernart, good choice – let us know when you get it and what you think
