70-200 f/2.8 IS

    Hi folks!

I took this one of my better half in the park a while back with my new toy. It’s shot at 200mm f/2.8 and 200 ASA + Canon 10D.
his was shot before I swapped from 10D to 40D and it would be cool to hear what you think of it!

Lastly… if you use same camera/lens as me (Canon 40D +Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS) I would be interested to hear how you feel with the general performance on focus, file/pixel resolution etc. -Reason being… I am not really that impressed with the outcome for time being, and would be keen to hear how other similar equipment is performing.

    Cheers!

Very nice image of beautiful lady. The lens looks like its doing the job, very sharp and great Brokeh. I have the 70-200 f4 (non IS) on my 40D and like the feel of it ( I also have the 100-400 and its a heavy lens) and I think its a top class lens.Focus is fast and never fails at keping up with the subject (panning). as for resolution, I have some A3 prints and they look fine to me.I am not into fussing over every little pixel/resolution all I want are sharp clear images that stand out.You could have some sleepless nights if you are expecting the most, but for the price Canon charge for the f2.8IS I suppose you want the “goods” for the money

This is a nice picture, very engaging-
    and a very nice tonality-

However, it might be better to embed pictures in the thread if possible-

Agreed, I like it too, it’s well composed, engaging and has good DoF.

I took my new 70-200 f2.8 L IS out for the first time last Sunday and was impressed with the results. It was a music gig and I plan to put a few pics up shortly (honest folks – I know I’ve not been around much!), some taken with this lens. It’s one heavy chunk of metal & glass so getting well rendered pin sharp pictures handheld at 200mm wins brownie points with me. I shoot mainly performances.

Overall at this stage I’m still getting used to the 40D but it is a huge improvement over the 20D, especially for noise handling. For me anything over ISO 800 on the 20D was largely unusable due to high contrast, easily blown highlights and blocked shadows, and the dreaded banding. I’m still testing it’s limits but it performed very well on ISO 1600 last Sunday. Deciding whether to bring it to another gig this weekend. As for the lens – I’m taking a shine to it already.

steelydan: I agree with what you say about not into fussing over pixels, but I honestly will have to say that I feel the sharp clear images isn’t presented as rapidly from it as I would have expected. Now… I have been running and working in a couple of photo stores, thus selling Canon for almost 10 years back home before I came over here, so I do think I have a balanced view what I should expect, but this time (so far) sadly I will have to sit a bit longer on the fence. :-))

jb7: Thanking you for the welcome! ;-)) What do you mean by embedded the picture in the thread…? (sorry.. but you are talking to a novice here..) :-)

stasber: I agree with what you say… and honestly… the lens is spectacular (usually)! I just genuinly wonder if I might have got a “Tuesday sample” of it! I might have to catch you later to perhaps have a look at a couple of your RAW files as help and assist. -Will PM you at some once I have become more used to my new stuff if I still am stuck. For the record: My 17-40 mm is STUNNING!!!! and MUCH sharper than the 70-200… :-(

Anyhow… thanks folks and cheers! Would still be cool to hear what others think!

i have the 40D and the 70-200 f4 and have done prints up to A1 from that setup and they look more than fine

Actually i think the f4 version is sharper than the 2.8 version, it has a slightly different element in it

For your interest I’ve posted this thread in the Gigs section of my recent escapade. Sure they’re small pics for display but nevertheless show some results with this lens.

    All the best
