Sports event photography

Hi,
I’ve run a few races in from time to time e.g. Dublin marathon, BUPA great Ireland Run, and ended
up buying shots of myself looking red faced and weather beaten from the likes of http://www.asiphoto.net.
Do photographers work directly for ASI or are they freelance who upload shots just like stock photography.
I’d be interested to know how this works and if it’s something that’s possible to get involved in.
I did try mailing ASI to ask about this, but no reply :(
Cheers,

ASI have a few select photographers in each country how they select from.
It’s an hourly rate they pay not per image.
For example when you shoot the Dublin Marathon, you will take about between 3000 and 6000 images depending on your location.
Also you will have to have one of the high speed cameras with a big buffer.
How do I know this? because I am one of the photographers they use for all the events in Ireland.Neil
rerunMemberHi Neil,
Thanks for the reply. The sports stuff seems quite different from the subject matter that makes up the body of work you have on your website. How did you get involved in that side of things?
What kind of kit would you find yourself using at one of these events and what would the assignment entail for you?

I got into the sports photography a few years back when another photographer friend was stuck for a second body to shoot a run in Dublin. I went along and enjoyed it, so have been shooting for ASI for the past 4 years now.
I use Canon EOS 1D with 400mm lens, Canon 1D mkIII with 70-200 and 10D with 24-70mm lens.
Shoot pre-race stuff and then the start, on course action full length and then the finish line close up and full length with the number in clear view at all time.
It was great fun a few years ago when you go to travel to the UK, but now they have so many photographers on the books we only get to cover races in Ireland.
Yes it’s very different form my B&W Landscape work I see on the website, but thats what makes it fun to do.Neil
