Sony has leaked the new A300 10.2 and A350 14.3mp with LiveView and a tilt and swivel screen.

    So that’s…

A100 10.2 CCD (getting long in the tooth now)
    A200 10.2 CCD
    A300 10.2 CCD
    A350 14.3 CCD
    A700 12.2 CMOS (oooh I want an A700)
A900 full-frame sensor rumoured to be 20+ mp

Sony sems to be getting a bit Canon-ish by splitting ranges. Lets see what happens to their lenses and see will they fall to affordable prices and reasonable quality.

I really hope sony offer some good value lenses.
I still have my minolta 5d than I don’t want to completely abandon, it would be nice to invest in another lens or 2 for it.

Just go for Sigma, Tokina or Tamron third party lenses as well as the few Minolta lenses hovering around. I haven’t seen a review where a Sony lens has come close to any other lenses in their range.

The Carl Zeiss 18-70mm Sonnar (think that’s the size) is supposed to be razor sharp and it gets fantastic reviews, I think it won lens of the year. It’s not cheap thou, I think about £400-500stg.

Just interested as to why you would choose the A700 over the 350? I realise it is not
all about pixels and I have looked at the specs on both of these and there is not a whole
lot of difference between them….except price. I am thinking of the 350 but would love
to hear why you think the 700 is better.

I have had the 100 for a little over a year now and am happy with it, the shutter is just so
noisy though and I am hoping this has been addressed in the newer models, fancy live view
    too!

Hiya Shutterbug, I’d love to get the A700 now, but I just can’t justify the cost at the moment, we’re expecting our second child shortly, we’re making renovations to the house and hoping to upgrade the car and caravan later this year so as you can expect a new camera is down the list of priorities at the mo. If I could start making regular sales then I’d buy one but we’ll see…..
The 300 and 350 are aimed at the beginner/intermediate market whilst the 700 is aimed at the more advanced enthusiast and here are the main reasons for preferring the 700 over the 350:

    1) Build quality/handling,
    2) Live View don’t mean a lot to me as I don’t do macro work.
    3) I also understand the 350 has more in-camera processing and sharpening, I’d rather have that control myself as provided by the A700.
    4) The 300/350 does not have Mirror Lockup – the 700 does, very important to me for 0.5 – 2.0sec exposures.
    5) 350 don’t have Depth of Field Preview (OK this is a minor thing)
    6) 700 CMOS – 350 CCD – this don’t really bother me and either does the 12 versus 14mp.
    7) 700 SSS adds up to 4 stops while the 350 only has 3 stops – fairly minor in the grand scheme of things
    8) Exposure compensation on the 700 is +/-3 stops while the 350 only goes to 2 stops, OK manual mode can overcome this.
    9) The 700 has a better bracketing function. 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 stops up to 5 frames while the 350 only has 0.3 and 0.5 in 3 frames. This counts when doing HDR processing.
    10) A big big difference is the Flash sync speed. I’m sick of lazy-eye shots on the A100 when using flash. The 700 has a sync speed of 1/250th while the 350 only has 1/160th this will make a big big difference when shooting weddings and portraits. And I’m giving serious consideration to doing wedding work.
    11) The 700 has Wireless flash the 350 does not (a wireless module is required), again a biggie when/if shooting weddings.
    12) The 700 has a far superior 3” screen. In fact the 700 screen is probably the best of any dSLR on the market at the moment, only the D300 is close.
    13) The 700 shoots 5fps while the 350 has 2.5fps which will make a difference to me when shooting motorsports.
    14) The Dynamic Range function on the 700 is supposed to be very very good. And this to me will make a difference when shooting Landscapes. I suggest you familiarize yourself with this function before committing to buy. In short, DRO adds shadow detail when shooting in JPEG, it’s almost like HDR(ish).

Now, I understand all these differences don’t and won’t mean the same to others but these are what count for me. Given I’m seriously considering shooting Weddings the differences in flash functionality do make a difference. The 300/350 don’t offer enough of a step forward, to me, over the A100. I’m happy with what I’m getting from the A100 at the moment.

I’m not up to speed with the differences in high ISO (400-800) image quality of the two cameras. But I’d be interested as I like to shoot motorbike racing, so that will interest me. I’ll research this over lunch time today and post on here later.

BTW: Camera World at doing the A700 for £699, including Cash back. They’re also doing the Sony 3600H (D) flash for £139. two very good prices.

Thanks for your detailed explanation, set out like that I can see the differences although as you
say minor but important if that is what you need. It is like most things as soon as buy there is a
    better one out there :)

I have not committed to change yet and am really happy with the 100 and in fact am still learning new
things about it, I should really stop buying Camera magazines and be happy with my lot :)

That is a very good price by the way, I am going to Focus in Birmingham for the day tomorrow (dangerous)
managed to get a return ticket for 10 euro including taxes, which I couldnt turn down could I ??

Make sure you leave Mr. Visa and Mr. MasterCard at home. Dangerous, very dangerous!!! But hey 10euro is nothing.
Yes it’s very true, once you buy something the marketing and advertising in the magazines gets your mind thinking. I sometimes make rash purchases after reading some mags and convincing myself I need X, Y or Z, when in reality I don’t Just because there’s a new camera out, don’t mean the one you got suddenly takes crap pictures. I just know, once I buy an A700, there will be an A700 replacement with LiveView or the long awaited 24mp full-frame A900, will be released and I’ll want that.

I don’t think Sony has a stand at Focus, maybe I’m wrong here thou. From what I can see the UK market doesn’t mean a hell of a lot to Sony hence not being at Focus.

Have a good trip and let us know if there’s anything interesting there.

So shutterboug, how did the Focus show go? Do you have an A350 or A700 now??

Hey Brian, No I was a very good girl I only bought a Sigma 70mm Macro lens
for the princely sum of £260 :) I had a great day wore my feet out but really
enjoyed it. I am holding off on any big purchase for a while anyway.

There was one thing that made me smile, well laugh out loud really, a “little”
Sigma f2.8 200-500mm lens for about £16,000 need a wheelbarrow to take
    it out :) :)

    Thanks for asking!
