Any comments on the relative merits of these two lenses? Obviously there is the different number of stops and a small difference in the focal lengths. There is also the flexibility of the Sigma that it will work with full-size sensor cameras, whereas the EF-S won’t.

What I am most interested in is how they perform – primarily for landscape photography. I am trying to determine if there is any justification for the price difference – in terms of results. I have read some stunning reports about the Canon; haven’t come across much about the Sigma, but seems to be the preferred lens of the landscape brigade in PI!

    Any thoughts/comments?

For a bit of fun, I have set up a poll to measure preferences.

I have the Canon EF-S 10-22mm and find it great for wide angle shots and landscapes. I’m looking forward to making good use of it when I go to some of the US National Parks in Utah this March. I’ll be visiting places like Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches parks, and these are just made for wide angle landscape photography. This will probably be my most used lens.

The Sigma 10-20 won all of the awards the glossy mags have going for landscape wide angle lenses so i bought one and they were right its perfect imo and i use it every time i take my camera out.

I too have the sigma lens and think it’s a great lens for landscapes and maybe cars as spud shows.

Sigma 10-20mm costs a fair bit less than the Canon 10-22mm also

I am interested in this question too.

You all seem to use Sigma around here. But has anyone used both?

I have borrowed a 10-22. It is lovely. I love the super fast USM and full time manual focusing. Its also a Canon – which is nice. But is that worth an extra ?150? That’s the bit I’m stuck on.

I’m also tempted by the Sigma AF 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG. A slightly more all round focal length, but still pretty darn wide. Although its kinda neither here nor there.. I’ll probably pass on that one. It is an old lens.

btw the Sigma 10-20 will mount on a crop sensor camera, but it will only be usable from about 16-20mm since it is designed for digital only.

KenRockwell (if he’s your cup of tea), has a detailed review on all of the ultrawides and also a separate review on the Canon 10-22. The major difference is the lack of distortion in the Canon compared to the others. I guess you decide if this is important to you. He has some good sample images showing the distortions and the required corrections in photoshop.[/url]
