MacBook Air

constantineParticipant
What a rip off. Even I think Apple are pulling the piss on this one
stcstcMemberwhy
what is it you think is wrong?
have you looked at machines which are equivalent that run windows???
MarkKeymasterIrish prices: ?1,699.00 – ?2,878.00
Actually I think that you’d probably get better bang for your buck with a Dell laptop (havent gone looking mind :) )
stcstcMemberI am not sure you will mark
not if its a similar spec etc
i know the sony is more expensive and smaller screen etc
quite a few of these machines have very low res screens etc
constantineParticipantOne usb port, no cd drive, no ethernet, no fire wire.
A really, really expensive mobile phone, except you can’t make calls on it.
You need a standalone machine if you want to upgrade software from CD
Battery is’nt even user replaceable.
Its a disposable laptop, but at a non-disposable price
Thats whats wrong with it.
constantineParticipantWhen the price comes down to reasonable levels (?600-?1200) than you’ll have a backup laptop worth considering.
Until than, I smell blatant gimmick.
I don’t know why I would want to put my laptop in an envelope, but apparently thats what apples market research has thrown up.
“78% of our users feel the need to post their laptop to someone, let us address the needs of our customers”
MarkKeymasterYou could be right Steve. I’ve not used an Apple (Mac) since 1988 (heck  ) so I’m not an expert. :)
Mick451ParticipantLike most things Apple what you’re paying for is the looks and being on the cutting edge.
I can remember lots of people whining when they stopped supporting floppy disks, and I haven’t seen one of them in a helluva long time, so I’m not going to lose sleep if one of their products doesn’t have CD/DVD drives. A memory stick or USB hard drive has more storage than either, and I use one of those to transport data far more than CD/DVD).I wouldn’t be concerned about ethernet or firewire either, it has a really good wireless spec and that’s the way things are going.
Macs are pretty well spec’d generally speaking, so I’d expect to pay more than I would for an average Dell box and Sony certainly aren’t a cheap PC either.I’ve used both PCs and Macs for nearly 20 years, could never understand the OS wars…well, once PCs went GUI.
I do like the way Apple push the envelope even if they are more expensive, mainly because what they do when it’s successful usually filters through to other manufacturers who do similar stuff for less.Gimmick?
Maybe, but they’ve a decent enough record with gimmicks that caught on when Jobs is at the helm.FlipflipParticipantTo echo Mick, the ethernet wouldnt bother me(I haven’t plugged an ethernet into my Macbook yet), the wireless more than makes up for it.
The lack of a firewire would annoy me however, but thats because I use home recording equipment and USB creates too much latency when recording.
I would agree that its deffo more of a backup laptop.
The whole CD drive thing would probably get a bit annoying but you can wirelessly access your computer or other laptop’s CD drive and install from there. Thats pretty cool.
I gotta admit, I like it. Wouldnt buy one mind you but I still like it.
stcstcMemberthe battery is user replaceable
the thing about this machine is its design for wireless networking, etc its not a replacement for their macbook pro, it designed to be small and light for on the plane etc
constantineParticipantHmmm.
Seems apple have struck a chord with this one, all points duly notED.
Personally, I think it looks pretty, but I don’t want one.
How many of ye would???

How many airlines provide wireless internet access while in the air?
irishshaguaParticipantI think there’s some Canadian airline either providing Wireless or moving towards providing wireless. Read it somewhere on the net.
Mick451ParticipantI wouldn’t say it’s struck a chord with me, it is what it is.
I’ve no use for any kind of laptop – I’ve a MacBook from years ago and it works fine for what I want, and herself has a big Mac laptop.
I generally work on day to day stuff on PCs, both at home and in t’office.
If my Macbook died then maybe I’d consider it, but that’s as far as it goes.constantineParticipantWell, I think its a heap of bumfluff from Apple.
Maybe, just maybe, that after years of being a loyal customer, I’m just a bit peeved with their bullshit.
I call 3 grand for a high end calculator taking a hand at us, the customer.
In my opinion, its a load of c**kcheese.
