Canon-ise me. And give me equip. advice!

So, I’m going away Next month. And plan to pick up a new Digital when I’m there. (going to New York). Quite excited cause it’s gonna be my first DSLR, and I’ve decided to go for a Canon 400D. Got the chance to test out one belonging to a friend and fell in love with it, so that’s the plan. What I’m wondering is whether it would be good to pick up some other equipment while I’m there, and if so, what would be most beneficial to have as a beginner? And another thing, is the 18-55mm standard lens kit enough to start off with?
nfl-fanParticipantOK.. you’ve decided to go for a Canon.
450D.. the 400D replacement is due out around the end of the month.. so my first piece of advise would be to wait and get this instead of the 400D maybe.
plainoldmeMemberbut wont it be more expensive? and to be honest, the canon 400D is pretty much the high end of my limit. (and only because its cheaper to buy it over there!)
nfl-fanParticipantSure wait till you get there and see how much they cost. Just be aware that the 450D is around the corner and has many new features.
plainoldmeMemberTadhg HealyMemberif not though and if youre just getting into slr photography the 400D is a great choice (and if the 450D comes out will probably drop significantly in price). As for lenses people tend to slate the kit lens but its not too bad and again will get you started. i would recommend though that you pick up a canon 50mm f/1.8 (otherwise known as the nifty fifty.) Can probably be gotten for less than $100 and is a cracker of a lens…really sharp and excellent for low light conditions. hope that helps
plainoldmeMemberben4130ParticipantIf you are going to new york, be sure to visit B+H… its a photographic equipment Mecca. Prices cannot be beat either. (without going grey market)
plainoldmeMemberSANCHOMemberthat new 18-55mm IS lens got a good review on dpreviews new lens section. And yeah the 400D is a great camera, hell even the 350D is a great camera :D
