Advertising your website
-
Brian_CParticipant
I?m just curious, how many ppl on here advertise their website? In particular paying for advertisement by means of Google Ads, other internet adverts or paid adverts in there local town/county newspaper, or even sticking up does A4 pages on lampposts and such?. I?m thinking of sticking an advert in our local rag(s) in an effort to increase awareness and ultimately boost sales?..
And if so, did you get any increase in traffic and/or boost in sales?
KPMParticipantI have found that advertising in the press & magazines is very expensive and does not necessarily get great returns.
A lot of friends of mine advertise using google adwords and have found them to be quite good. I am getting my website revamped & redeveloped from flash to html and will give the adwords a go then. I had used them for a while and found I got a few enquiries, more than press & magazine ads and a lot cheaper.
For example, a one page ad in a wedding magazine will set me back around EU1,000 inclusive of VAT, whereas adwords cost about EU100 per month – and can be stopped & restarted at any stage.
I know it sounds like a cliche – but by far the best advertising is word of mouth. If you consistently produce high quality work people will take notice. One happy customer might tell 10 people about you, if two of them use your services (you didn’t specify what aspect of photography you were trying to sell) and are happy and they tell 10 people each etc… you get the picture. It might take time, but you will get a much more solid customer base if its built on recommendations etc.

Brian_CParticipantKevin, I certainly won?t be taking out an advert in a magazine, certainly not at 1,000yoyo?s. I just may give the Google Ad?s a shot, thou.
BTW: I had a scope at your site, you have some lovely wedding shots there, nice work.
andy mcinroyParticipantBrian,
I don’t tend to actively advertise. However, Google is the most powerful friend you’ll ever have. So be nice to it.
I think a combination of different things can help build up your profile and get more people visiting your site.
– Exhibitions
– Magazine submissions
– Forum postings (not just photographic ones)
– Local newspaper features
– Photography Sales (each photo you sell is an advertisment)
– Regular content on your webpageAnd to repeat, “Google Indexing” !!!!
Andy
jubileeParticipantjust a point to note.. you can spend whatever you like on adwords per month.. i.e you could start off at 30 euro and see how you go.
petercoxMemberI use adwords and find it to be very cost-effective. I have also used the back page of the Irish Times, with moderate success.
I’m currently advertising in the classified section of Digital Photo magazine, but it’s early days on that yet. Initial results don’t look terribly promising though.
So I agree, print advertising can’t compare to web advertising (read: adwords). I second everything Andy said – put yourself out there and you’ll get the business eventually. It’s not a quick process, though!
Cheers,
Peter
