Birds – No Idea…

We got one of these bird feeders about a week ago just to keep the young fella happy. Not a bird in sight all week, then a flurry of activity today.

I’m not a nature photographer by any stretch of the imagination. These were shot through the kitchen window. No idea what they are…

    Thanks for the info Noely.

Are these guys common or rare? Is there any reason why one of the Siskins has far more yellow than the other (gender)?

The males tend to be more colorful.
    Two nice shots nfl-fan.
you may want to set up a natural perch above your feeder.

Forgive my ignorance Jim… but what do you mean by a natural perch? The feeder is attached to a hanging basket thingy at the moment… see below

I’m with Noelly, I’ve a feeder up for about a year now and I’ve only ever had a goldfinch at it twice! Jammy git indeed :P
    Nice shots, well done.

Good shots John, very sharp as well. You are lucky to get a goldfinch at your feeder, like others I have been feeding birds for a few years now and no goldfinch. Something to remember, no nuts for the Summer, seed only, as the young birds cannot digest the nuts.

One perch [not a choice of many] near the feeder will mean that you can pre-focus on it as they like to have a good look round before grabbing some food.

A quote from the birdwatch Ireland website.

    Nuts
Peanuts are the most popular food for garden birds and
attract a wide range of species. Be sure to buy from a
reputable supplier as mouldy peanuts can kill birds. When
feeding during the spring and summer ensure all peanuts are
fed from a mesh peanut feeder
, as whole peanuts can be
    harmful to young birds.

Here is a link to their site. They suggest putting out fruit, fat, etc.

So, Big Fella and Beef, if you change your bait you may yet be able to be as attractive as nfl-fan all year round!

The feeder was only erected about a week ago so looks like I got lucky!

The nuts are good too.. fresh as a daisy.. tried a few

One more bird from the same batch.. again, no idea, so let me know.

    Thanks people.

Try attaching a limb extending out from the top of your hanger.

Google Birds of Ireland you will find help with identication of these birds. Also Garden birds and small birds.

Anyone know what the little fella in the last shot I posted is? Took a look at Brickee’s link but could find this fella.

It’s a Long Tailed Tit, with Siskin round the back. Beautifully captured by the way.

Male Siskin will have the black cap on his head, female no cap and not as brightly coloured also appears a tad smaller.
Well done getting this mix so quickly. I would suggest you add a Niger/Thistle seed Feeder, Goldfinch and Siskin usually go crazy for it should pull in any Brambling also if they are about
Keep feeding through the summer, but as Pixelle say’s use wire mesh feeder, avoid net feeders as they can trap birds legs.

    Cheers for that RayK1.

As I type this there’s two Goldfinch feeding and a Siskin lurching waiting for a bite. To be honest I’ve had Goldfinch and Siskin out there all day everyday since Saturday.
