These definitely wouldn’t be my type of images but they definitely do elicit an emotonal response when looked at which I suppose has to be applauded. Also the gritty state of the pictures (lots of noise and the bw conversion of a very black and white scene) adds to what is the subject matter. I think all of the shots suffer from looking a bit too “staged” for me. I think the overall feel of the images would have been better for me if everyone was not looking straight at the camera. Looks too much like posing when they are looking straight at the camera.

These are definitely a set that I would not see to much, but would not be images that I would like very much.

    Sorry

well yeah thats understandable, its not everyones cup of tea, I dont expect everyone to love em. Kinda why i’m gonna start either working alot more in Los Angeles or spending alot more time there.
My friend Cyril Helnwein (http://www.cyrilhelnwein.com) got alot of slack for displaying soem of his latest work at 2007’s Peoples Photography in Dublin, as did I, but in L.A they love him!

I took these at ISO 1600 on purpose to make em gritty and used ms paint to scale down, hence the over grainyness, but the prints at 8×12 dont seem as intensely grainy.

I do appriciate any kind of criqitue and appriciate the fact that someone has taken then time to do so

IMO the lighting is too bright, and the noise does’nt do anything for me either.
I realise they may be somebodys version of art, but they’re not for me….

Wasn’t trying to throw slack at you… I find it very interesting looking at different takes on things. Just, tehy didn’t really do it for me. I think if you could re-shoot and maybe not have as much interaction with the camera they ould come out a bit better, more kind of seedy and voyeuristic if there is no interaction with the camera.

Didn’t mean to sound like I was insulting your art if thats how it came across.

Hello LaGwardia, and welcome to the site-
good to see you posting pictures so soon-

Often the first comment on a picture will have an influence on the way a thread develops-
I’d have to disagree with Brian about his emotional response to the pictures-
    because I didn’t have one-

And I think it has to do with his later comment about the shots looking too staged-

There is an awareness of the camera being a third person in the room,
and this gets in the way of the voyeuristic element-

I wouldn’t suggest that these pictures are designed to shock-
this is far too mainstream these days-
but there is a suspicion that it could have been the intention-
    here, obviously, not in LA-

But we have the internet here too, you know-

I think you might have to push these a lot harder-
the last one looks like its getting there,
but again, the presence of the camera kills it-
with the girls obviously holding a pose and mugging-

There is perhaps a possibility that there are great pictures to be taken in a scenario such as this one-
but you’d have to convince us that it was being acted out for real,
    and not just dressing up-

    Good first post though-
    it certainly grabs the attention,
whatever way you look at it-

no they werent meant to shock atall, trying to do that is like shooting fish in a barrell, even the ones i have of a girl shooting up or one i have with a girl clingfilmed into a real coffin isn’t meant to shock.not in the conventional sense.
i do like when people ask me ‘how the hell did you get that done?’ or something
theres alot more fecked up photos out there that shock. im just trying to do something different.

The look to camera spoil these for me. They look staged and the expressions aren’t telling the story that the content suggests. I think if they were shot as observational rather than engaged, they would work better and let the viewer have time to explore the narrative. There is a lot of this content around and they don’t really hit the spot. The high contrast works well but would work better against darker walls I think.

    Thanks for posting your work.

Well I for one would like to see more of your work posted here. Again, I would agree that they do look too staged, and to me that makes them look too much like the myriad of pseudo Fetish photography sites littering the www

But it is an area, for me at least, that has so many possibilities photographically speaking, so I hope you’ll keep posting and developing (excuse the bad pun) this idea.

Well its something that you have to walk a fine line on without it being completely dismissed, people seem to associate the word ‘fetish’ with filth and that’s what i’m trying to steer well clear on. Any nudes or topless stuff I do I keep to a minimum and most of that is done outdoors so it’s more interesting.
Although stuff like this has garnered objections when ive shown it…
excuse the poor quality. im too lazy to open Photoshop so ive used MSpaint to scale down the scan (this was one of my first pics ever)

Keep the work coming !! Its something a bit different from the normal posts.
I like your stuff so far anything and you have posted i think is great! :)

Been looking around at your stuff on the site and Im well impressed. I really like your style.

And I guess you can disregard my comment in the Koji thread considering you already know Cyril. I am pretty good friends with his younger brother and all that crowd so I’ve sessioned up his gaf many a time. haha. Top notch fella. And a great photographer with some very orginal ideas.

Anyway, keep posting cause Im liking everything so far.

    Tim.

Amadeus or Ali? last time i was in Gurteen with Cyril we ended up on the roof drinking whiskey at 5am. I stayed with him in L.A the other week, went to his latest art show.was a great turn out for him.
