MONEY!

Hi.
New to the site but looks pretty helpful.
I got a photograph published in the Examiner today. Its my first time to have one printed in a large paper. I hope to get a bit of € of out it but I have absolutely no idea what would be a good/reasonable price.
Any body got any ideas? It was a centre big colour for a rugby match.Thanks.
markcapilitanParticipantI might be wrong, but last time I had a pic in a paper, it was they who decided the rate…and you have to invoice them before they’ll pay you – get invoicing if you want your dough.
petercoxMemberThe time to get money for photographs published in the paper is before it gets printed. As Mark says, when you get published they will have a standard rate they offer. You might be able to negotiate that up a bit if it’s a particularly good image and they really want it, or if you’re a frequent contributor. Otherwise it’s pretty much a take it or leave it operation.
It sounds like you submitted this without requesting payment, and the assumption may be (certainly a valid one) that you weren’t looking for payment. That may scupper your chances of getting full and fair payment for the image. I’d get in touch with them and sort that out, perhaps sending an invoice with a followup call in a few weeks if payment isn’t forthcoming (checking what their standard rates are first).
Cheers,
PeterpaulParticipantIt depends on the paper. Normally they have a set rate, which is anything from €30 up, per printed image.
I’ve never submitted to the Examiner, so can’t say for sure what their rate is.
Submitting on spec, and invoicing later is very common for freelance, and they generally pay without too much hassle.
ThorstenMemberBack in the days when I submitted work to the Examiner (when it was still known as the Cork Examiner!) they paid based on the column width of the image used, regardless of height, with a higher fee if the image was on the back page and a higher fee again for the front page. As far as I know, most papers still pay based on square inches. You could always check the NUJ site for more info, as they have suggested standard rates for various types of publications.

AFAIK, those rates only apply to NUJ members. Non-members don’t get paid anywhere near those fees.
From talking to a fellow sports freelance photographer, the Examiner pay a rate per image printed, irrespective of size. If you email the paper, they’ll give you a list of their rates.
Freelance submissions tend to be more on a per image printed rate than anything else. But, of course, this does vary from paper to paper, and from type of submission too. Individual photographers may be able to agree different rates with the editor.
eointParticipantthanks for all the feedback any way. i work for the college paper so said i’d send a pic or two into the examiner to chance my arm. extremely surprised and delighted they used it. the money thing was just the icing on the cake. i sent them an invoice. apparently the standard rate is €70 for a photo. i was happy enough with just having it printed but 70 quid would also make me happy!
