Unusual hare maybe.
-
SeaviewParticipant
Came accross this fellow on top of Mangerton yesterday, very unusual colouring for a hare. Picture quality isn’t great as he was too quick for me. Can anyone shed some light on the strange colouring.
Dave.

SeaviewParticipantJust wondering could anyone explain the strange colouring of this Hare. He or she was mostly white with a few patches of brown, never seen anything like it before.
PixelleMemberI went to http://www.irishhare.org/ and found the following:
” The coat of the Irish hare may vary in colour throughout the year, sometimes developing white patches. On rare occasions all-white individuals have been recorded and this has sometimes earned them a place in local folklore and legend “

Alan RossiterParticipantWell done Dave – you’ve just blown “Folklore & Legend” out of the water. It’s certainly unusual.

PS – I’ve seen a white blackbird once…stuffed, he was!
PeteTheBlokeMemberI think a lot of mammals have a tendency to go white in the winter, don’t they?
White blackbirds are different! A shot of one of them could be an interesting
entry for this month’s Mono competition.RayK1MemberVery nice shots, Pixelle is right re Irish Hare. Not sure if it was weather related but two Hares were spotted on the North Bull
in early Jan with near full white coats..SeaviewParticipantThanks for the comments / info, I have sent an email to the link pixelle supplied and will let you know if I get a reply.
Dave.
TinyMemberthe colour is his winter coat… very common among hares.. espically if they live in areas that tend to get snow during the winter. I saw loads of them in scottland several years ago
munsterman28ParticipantIts common in scotland but from what I know very uncommon here nowadays
SeaviewParticipantYour right Munsterman, the Irish Hare Organisation who I email the photos to have been in touch and have confirmed that Hare of this colour are very rare on our Island at present. They have asked to use some of my shots on their website which is great of course.
