Faulty Canon Lens and Canon say its not gurantee covered
-
colmrangerParticipant
Folks,
here is a workd of warning about buying camera gear on Hong Kong Ebay,
I purchased a Canon 24-105mm lens last August and it has never worked properly. I get an error message intermittantly saying bad contact from Lens to camera.
This probelm got a lot worse lately and the Lens is completely unuseable. Anyway i contacted Canon Ireland and they will not look at the Lens as i cannot find my customs clearance Certificate.
Does anyone else know where i can have lens fixed as i am willing to pay but rather not use those Canon people in dublin. They were very unhelpfull over the phone just because i sadi i purchased lens in Hong Kong.
I honestly had a clearanc cert but i never dreamed of keeping it, i just chucked it in the bin last summer.
paulParticipantFirstly, it should not matter where you bought the lens. Customs clearance has nothing to do with them. In fact, I wouldn’t even mention where it was bought.
But, if the lens is under warranty, then just ship it back to the store you bought it from. It would cost you the same amount to ship it to Canon anyway.
Other than that, phone the Canon UK Service centre (they deal with Canon UK and Canon Ireland service calls). – Tel: +44 8705 143 723
BMParticipantDavePParticipantDid you register the warranty with canon when you received the lens? I have seen a few posts relating to Canon warrant on kit bought in the states. I think there is local and international warranty. have a look here:

colmrangerParticipantYes i did register the lens on the Canon site not that this makes any difference :(
petercoxMemberCanon’s lens warranty is a bit murky. I’ve never had cause to repair a lens under warranty, but they do have a local and international warranty. How that works if you bought in HK, I don’t know.
The good news is that it can be repaired for sure. I’ve used the Camera Repair Centre in Portobello Harbour in Dublin (same building as DML). He has repaired my much abused 24-70 and it functions beautifully now. I’ve also used him to repair/service older medium/large format lenses. Always quality work, and reasonable rates.
His number is 01 4781638.
Cheers,
PetercolmrangerParticipantThanks Peter i will contact this guy tomorrow.
Someone else recommended him too over on boards.ie
Noely FParticipantHe’s been mentioned to me from the chaps at Camera exchange too. I believe Makers can tell if your camera or lens is an import by the serial number…!
eshortieParticipantThis is helpful, my camera LCD is damaged, just took it out of the bag a few minutes ago and its all white/cream with sommes black lines!! :(
The plastic casng isn’t caracked, just the LCD is broke….the camera is working fine.
It’s an EOS 400DI don’t know what to do because I got it from Hong Kong ebay too.

Anyone have a link to these posts. I can’t seem to work the search function. Cheers.
steelydanParticipantAll Canon lenses come with International warrenty. Not cameras thought. So there no reason for the customs clearance form to be produced, you could have been living in Hong Kong and bought it there.
colmrangerParticipantFolks,
Thanks for all your input and help!
Great news! :D
Canon UK contacted me 4 weeks ago and told me to send the lens over with the International Warranty card.
Today the lens was returned to me by courier and it’s fixed and was all covered under the International guarantee despite what Canon Dublin had been telling me previously.
Delighted too all fixed at no expense on my part. :)

Is this true for canon lenses bought in the US. I was told that they were just USA warranties. Hope you are right.
colmrangerParticipantThorstenMemberThat’s great news indeed. All’s well that ends well, etc. :D
The folks running Canon Ireland seem to know diddly-squat and that’s reflected in their pricing policies, which are so out of step with the remainder of Europe that Irish retailers simply cannot compete on price. To be honest, they would be the last people I would think to contact if I had a problem with any of my Canon gear!
