Public seabaths

Hi Folks haven’t posted it a bit…but anywho.

These are the preliminary digital shots for a project on the public sea baths in Dublin bay, the idea is to show the decay of the baths and the beauty in that decay. Influence for the work ranges from Bernd and Hilla Becher (initially), Thomas Struth and a few others but what I’m trying to get some way close to is the work of Michael Kenna http://www.michaelkenna.net/html/japan02/index.html. I’ll be shooting in Medium Format and hoping to have nice even light. Any suggestions or guidance is greatly appreciated…not sure what film to use thinking of Ilford Panf 50

    Thanks

Rest of the work can be seen here, if interested.

I saw these photos and I thought they were fascinating, so I went first to your flickr and looked through all of them and it was really interesting!

I had never heard of these so I tried to look up any information I could and was unable to find much history.

    These are really awesome.

All the photos are well taken and certainly document your subject.

I’d love to know more about this..as I would usually associate baths with a warmer clime. They look so disheveled but from what I can read they were actually functional until fairly recently?

    Cool stuff!

    Thanks for posting~~~~~~~

    Thanks folks

No, all taken with digital…canon 30D first outing, I’ll be using it for all the donkey work before doing actual film work.

As for the history of them, I’m not to sure I just grew up with the knowledge of them being there, and obviously there’s Dun Laoghaire baths which got a new lease of life for a while in the 80s. I’ll be doing some research into the history of them so if your interested I’ll be keeping the flickr site updated over the next 2 months when I start the medium format.

    The four baths are

Dun Laoghaire (soon to be demolished)
    Blackrock
    Sandymount
    Clontarf

Isn’t it a bit risky to shoot digital when you know you want film?
This light is changing all the time-
what happens if you do the final set later,
and then find that you prefer something about the digital versions?

Its a good subject for pictures-
    all that weathered mass concrete-
    should get some fantastic textures-

Will you be filtering the film versions?

First and last here would be my picks-

Not to worried about the difference between film an digital as the digital is just to get an idea for the locations, shape and form, get it going over in my head. I already know that the film will be a lot different light wise as it will be shot either very early morning or late evening on very long exposures.

Not sure about filtering I have bought a red filter in case the sky is very bright, not sure about anything else, looking for even light no strong shadows…so if you have any suggestions???

    Cheers for the feedback.
